Windshield Cracked

It was a cold morning. I already have a stone crack in the windshield of my '79 RX-7.
I pulled out the choke, started up the engine to let it warm up.
After it was warm, I took off for work.
Then I started to notice a streak on my windshield. I could actually hear and see the crack growing horizontally across my windshield.

Had the whole windshield replaced on Friday while at work. $196.00 all in.

Looks good now, but CRAP!

That's why you should have those stone chips repaired. It's a lot cheaper than replacing the windshield, and insurance will usually cover it with no deductible.

Not a bad price. The best part is that you now have a windshield that you can easily look though.

The windsheild on my 88 vert is the original, it got a stone chip two weeks after I purchased it. I fixed it right away. After 18 years, when driving into the sun I can't see much because of the distortion and glare from the thousands of micro pits. I need to replace it, but I doubt I will get a price anywhere near that good.

I have a 79 with the same problem. I cannot even point towards the sun when it is setting, or else i cant see a thing.

I spent most of the friggin day, at least a nice one here in NE GA (high 60's on Christmas Eve, a gift for sure, maybe there is something to this Jesus stuff) trying to figure out how to remove an intact and virtually new windshield from my 85 parts car to use to replace the one in my tan 84 GSL that got done in by a can of freon (did you ever read the fine print about not leaving a can in a hot car?)

I was hoping for easy success, have it out in an hour or two. But I'm ready to call in the professionals. The dang thing is surrounded by molding that won't come off without getting all bent up, then it's glued to the body with some kind of thick rubber seal. Yes I tried a piano wire, forget it and the manuals are useless. If the pros can do it for less than $200 (in my yard, of course) it's definately worth it. Anybody know any secrets about getting the friggin windshield out?

Oh yeh, Merry Friggin Christmas!

I think for what a glass shop would charge for R&R, it might be cheaper in the long run to have them install a new one.

However, with that said. When I lived in Philadelphia, there were many used glass shops where you could get a replacement WS installed for about $100 (20 years ago). Maybe there is some cheap option like that in a big town like Atl.

The best trick I know of for getting windsheilds out of cars is the piano wire trick. Except, when you are cutting the seal, squirt loads of dishwasher soap around the wire. This helps the tar-like adhesive to stay seperated where the piano wire cut it, rather than just sticking back together once the piano wire has passed. It may take a few passes around the windsheild, but without the dishsoap the piano wire trick is prety useless.

HarborFreight has a kit for it, but I've never tried it. The kit has a grit covered wire for sawing, IIRC. Around here I can get a guy to come out to the house and R&R for about $200. There are lots of shops that do it, so just check the yellow pages and get the cheapest one.
