Why do our windows suck?
I have manual windows on an 85. Drivers window basically would not function at all.
I removed regulator, greased all moving parts and spring. Re-installed. Now the up and down crank operation is very smooth but halfway up it pops out of the front track. I searched and found a few typical problems:
Plastic clip that holds glass to reg: mine look just fine
Need to adjust regulator on door: there is only a tiny amount of adjustment there
Need to lube tracks: don't have any silicone spray and don't see it helping
Adjust tracks: rear looks stationary, front moves 1/16 inch unless I drill a new hole
The entire glass droops towards the front of the car. and when rolled up the glass tends to push outward from inside the car out of track. and the back (towards rear of car comes away from track). The crank shaft is a little loose but seems to work smooth and quietly after greasing. I don't see a problem with the regulator, maybe it's there, I don't know.
I did read one response about shimming between the regulator and the glass and I'm about to try that next, but I'm skeptical.
Anyone have any ideas?

Biggest cause of the window binding you describe is due to the front part of the glass catching in the track on it's way up. If luging the mechanism and track doesn't solve or improve the problem, then it's time to replace the track liner itself. Over time, the liner will slip out of place at the bottom of the front track and cause the binding.
Easiest work around without replacing the track is to pull up on the front part of the glass while it's being cranked up. A loose worn crank mechinism make this worse, replace it if you can find a better one.

I saw another adjustment where you make that hole bigger, as in make it a slot towards the back of the car. Thats the screw to make minor adjustments. It was said you don't want to make the the slot too big though. I will be trying this when the weather stays above 8 degrees.

If I assist the window up into perfect closed position as soon as i lower the window, the front falls out of track. Is this because the rear of the window is dragging? I'll get some silicone spray tomarrow and see what happens. i'm still open to more input though.

It takes about 10 hours to properly align the windows. Just take your time and keep on trucking and then when you think its all good it'll fall off again and then you should buy all new stuff and replace it and then spend about another 10 hours and then you will be just fine. Just try not to take the panels on and off too much because then you'll mess those up too.
The hole that is sloted for adjustment. Just make the slot a little longer and adjust, its not hard and your window will not fall off track. Take your time, make an adjustment then operate the window without the door panel on and readjust if necassary. Good luck.
It's not hard to replace parts or to adjust. I've done several. But you MUST use good OEM seals from mazdatrix, and it helps to spray a little silicon lube in the channels to ease binding. But wornout channel seals will cause binding, and so will new seals that are too hard or don't fit well. Save yourself some trouble and get good new OEM seals.

I've had my fun with the windows enough. It has gotten to the point where I'm going to retrofit with the manual windows. I've had them both and the power windows are more trouble than they're worth... which is exactly zippo **** nothing. The way I see it, if you just spend the nominal moneys needed to replace all those worn out parts, you'll save yourself a ton of hassle. The enjoyment I get from properly working windows is worth so much more than the $150 bucks you can spend on getting them that way with new parts. God its great being able to smoke without worrying if you will be able to put the windows up when you park.

Same exact window problem. But I have power windows. Thanks for the thread. I have ordered new window channel and moldings before I found this thread.
my drivers wondow crank is becoming increasily difficult to close...the damn crank is all loose while im trying to roll up the window! I have already broke one handle because of it! Is replacing the Window Regulator a bitch to do? i know my regulator is on its way out

And you may have to adjust the front guide so that the window stays in track if you have not done that yet
I had to move mine back about 1/32".
There really isn't that much to adjust overall but take your time, drive for a while with the door panel off (check to make sure the window stays in track when you shut the door).
The window comes out with two screws at the bottom of the unit (they screw into plastic pieces that fit into the glass). There is a chance the plastic pieces are broken or will be broken when you are done. I lucked out on one door, not so on the other.

Yeah guys its just horrible but we have old cars
, the best trick is to switch out the regulators. You can spend the money for new ones, or go search the junk yard for cars with lower mileage or in general less use.
You can get them between $25-45 dollars at most junkyards, Pick-n-Pull, or Pick Your part... etc. The junk yards where filled with Rx7's at one point but now not so much. With tons of good parts getting crushed or thrown away. And you get to learn how to remove the parts on a junk car first so when you get back to your car you actually have a clue of what your doing.
When you find a good or new one you can tell how much straighter they are, the old stuff just gets so bent out off place.
But I digress...haha. Thats just how I learned how to work on my Rx7 and probably the most fun, until I found the Rx7 Club 4 years later
