Who has rebuilt/ported their own engine. How much did it cost.

I have decided to scrap my 13b project all together. It just seems like to much work put together a well ported 91 motor.

How often do you have to replace the rotor housings, my engine only has 94000 miles but will have about 100k by the time I rebuild it.

I was looking at prices at Mazdatrix. I was thinking about getting new rotor housings and having them port them, and sending in my side housings to get lapped, and then I figure I might as well have them port them too.

ANyhoo, the total price for everything,

new housings with a streetport,
lapped sides with streetport,
rotor kit,
engine kit,
hardend stationary gears,(i want to spin it up to 8500, plus nitrous... necessary)
some other stuff i cant remember,

it came out to like $2300 or something,

If I do all the porting myself (which Im shure I can do but I dont think I could do it as well as MT)
and use my old housings and dont get the sides lapped, with just the basics needed to rebuild it, it comes out to like $900 or something.

What do you think,
this is for a daily summer driver that is driven hard on a HOURLY basis.

I paid $100 for what I needed to port it - $90 gasket kit, $5 tube of Hylomar, and tax.

Internal bits were good. If you're gonna port an engine, do it while it's still in good running shape, instead of after the engine blows.

i agree with peejay, you should definitely build the engine while it's still running properly ...

however, i would recommend getting new oil O-rings and new apex seal springs in addition to the gasket set because you have no clue as to when they might fail.

Theres no way I would build this engine without new apex seals and all the engine gaskets.

I work at a mazda dealer and i think I can get the most of the parts there I think. Maybe even cheap rotor housings.

I can only get STOCK parts though. The stock apex seals on a 12 a are iron right. the ones MT sells are steel, which i keep hearing is better and allows higher RPM.

Mazdatrix sells genuine Mazda parts. So the apex seals you could get from MT are the same as you'd get from the dealer.

Seing as you work at the dealer, find out how much it'd cost for parts and compare it to what Mazdatrix charges, and get 'em from the cheapest source.

mazdatrix also sells carbon-aluminum seals which are the ones for high-RPM use. I think they only sell steel seals for 2mm seal engines ('86-up) where they want a one-piece seal for bridgeport applications and greater strength than the carbon seals.

it said steel seals for the 81-83.

Are the stock ones Iron.

Even if they are just stock seals can I still spin like 8000 if I wanted to.

Stock iron seals can go to 8500. Recommended that you don't go for extended RPM above 6200, but they'll "live" between 6200 and 8500.

good! i'm glad ... i wasn't trying to insult you by my suggestion or anything ...

most of the guys i used to know, that asked me to build engines for them, they would say that they want to use it for this and that, and 8500 RPM, but when i told them to at least get new apex seals and oil seals, they saw the prices and started trying to get me to use just the gasket set ...
