when should the fan come on?

I have the stock fan and it often comes on within a minute or two of starting the vehicle cold. When should it come on?

Did not know that the RX7's had a electric fan stock.

No, the fan should not come on untill a certian temp. I pretty sure you would not reach that temp in a minute or two.

On many cars if the Coolant Temp Sensor is shorted, it'll make fan fan run all of the time.

Is it a GSL SE?

Its typical of a clutch fan to spin up apon startup, it will go away after a couple of seconds. It senses the heat and the fluid/spring inside tightens up to engage the fan (most noted by the noise) Your fine unless it does it all the time, then youll need a new fan clutch. Less of course you do have an electric fan that someone put in aftermarket. Stock 1st gens have fan/clutch from Hiroshima.

It's a 83 GSL, stock fan setup. The fan doesn't run all the time, but I noticed the other day that the fan started up within a minute or so of startup. I plan to replace the fan with an electric fan anyway.

Basically as said before, its just the fan clutch getting stuck when the car is first started. Its defective basically. The fan clutch is supposed to allow the fan to spin at a "constant speed" no matter what the engine RPMs are, but when you first start the car the clutch sticks causing the fan to spin at the same speed as the engine, thus the loud whirring noise you will hear from time to time when starting. Hope that helps.
