You sure you aren't just pushing like 600HP or have a CVT?

It would appear that something in it is broken... if you're lucky it's just the speedo cable (runs from the trans to the speedo.) If you aren't, it's the internals, not much you can do (for a reasonable price anyway) about that.

If it turns out that the gauge is busted it is possible to replace the speedo gauge with another working one, and not have to replace the entire cluster. I did it not to long as my speedo was doing the same thing yours is. Or you can just get a working cluster from another rx7. Theres Just a few bolts and screws holding the cluster in.

The speedometer is dead, find another other one that works and replace the one you have. By the way, this is typical - speedo's tend to start failing in cold weather. Once this kind of failure starts it damages the return spring and messes up the calibration.

buh...

just mark on your tach what certain speeds are in the gears you normally cruise them in. my old car did this, turns out 55mph is 3k on the tach, and 45 was 2.5k, 65 was 3.5k, by logical deduction every 10mph was attained very 500rpm's

Not sure its the speedo. Takes just a couple minutes to check cable and gear from underneath. That noise doesnt sound like a speedometer related issue either..

Make sure if you take the speedo gear out to check it that you jack the car up from rear. This way no gear oil will spill. Atleast it shouldnt spill unless overfilled. One 10mm bolt holds speedo gear in. Cable is screwed onto it just handtight.

I doubt it's a broken cable. Unless its not in the back of the guage all the way it wouldn't register speed on the guage if it was broke. Issue is guage or gear. Probably not gear either, but a simple quick check to knock it off the list of possibilities.
