Whats in a Name?

I hear so many people here saying that if it is not powered by a rotary, then it is not an RX.

Well apparently, the folks at Mazda- who developed the RX cars dont think so.
RX9: V6 hybrid.
I found this today (it may have been talked about or posted already, I don't know.):

Mazda RX9

V6 hybrid. Interesting.

Reading though all the comments on the page, I notice that alot of people are saying the same thing, if it is not rotary powered , then it is not an RX.

Later,
Bill

I agree. Take a look at that car. I don't think we'll be seeing anything that even remotely resembles that any time soon.

The original Mazda RX-9 had a Rotary Engine. This vehicle is an Independent Design, connected with Michelin, not Mazda. Simply because Mazda allows a name to be used by an independent Designer for competition, does not reflect how Mazda themselves would use the RX designation.

In better Forum, not specific to 1st Generation RX-7

Since your evidence that the next Rx is going to be V6 powered is a few drawings on some random website, I think you may be wrong on this one.

If anything they'll have the rotary engine optional, Rx does stand for Rotary Experiment.

What Mazda say about the RX name:
"Once and for all, this is Mazda’s nomenclature: For Sporty cars, the first letter denotes either engine type or Segment type, followed by an X that stands for sports. For example, the RX-8 means: Rotary Sports 8, the MX-5 means piston-engine sports 5, and the all new CX-7 means Crossover Sports 7. For RX Series it has always meant Rotary Sports..."

On top of that I thought that Mazda decided to stop going upwards in numbers and designated the Rx3 for the small rotary powered sports cars. The Rx7 for the hardcore enthusiast, take on all performance car, and the Rx8 for the sports car that you can take to get groceries and based largely upon the middle aged family. That was my interpretation anyway, and thus making an Rx9 nothing.

The whole concept behind the RX name is the rotary, other wise its just another average car.

funny how you bring this topic up today. The local paper had an article in the 'Driving' section titled 'What's in a Name?'

no mention of the rx7, just general article about how different automakers determine the names for their cars and how time have changed from actual names to mostly letters & numbers these days.
