whats a better ehaust option for my gsl-se

some people have told me that having a 3in will give my 1gen better response, and others say that having a 3in wont give me back pressure.that i was better off with a 2in 1/2.what do you think i should do?

the gsl-se is me first car and want some real good response.iv seen a couple of 2gen with 3in tubing(non-turbo).i asked the owner and he told me he gets better response and more performance.since the 2gen has a 13b, im guessing it will do the same with my car.if any of you could explain to me why or why not i should go with the 3in,i will deeply appreciate it.

You will loss a lot of low end with the 3" but you gain some on the top end. The 2 1/2" is a happy medium.

i have RB race header to 2.5 in collector, then 3 in back. it is a noticeable drop in low end(does anyone drive below 4k anyway) but it screams in the upper rpm.

3" is a waste of time on the street. Been there and done it. The exhaust ports on the engine combined aren't near the area of a 3" pipe. On my GSL-SE, the best bolt on power was from the Racing Beat street port system. It is a dual 2" system that collects into a single 2.5" (O.D.) pipe and then straight through the muffler. This system gives great power everywhere. I had a header on that car that collected to a 2.5" pipe and it was better than stock. You do have to change out the rest of the exhaust though as it is only a 2" diameter system all the way back. I've also had a header to 3" collector with a 3" pipe all the way back to a straight through 3" muffler. Very loud system. No low end to speak of and the top end kicked in about the time I shifted gears. Peak power number may look good on a dyno but it is worthless from a drivability standpoint. From an acceleration standpoint it wasn't really any faster than stock. It's average power that makes your car perform better and not peak power. Everyone drives below 4000 rpm far more than they think they do whether they admit it or not. My RB system gave the best overall performance over the entire usable powerband and it wasn't loud at all. It is a little heavy but the weight is not near enough to offset the gains. It is about the same weight as the factory exhaust which is heavy. Don't go to a light system that makes less power and is slower. Do what you want and listen to who you want to but I've actually had all three of these different options on a GSL-SE and am not spouting off theory, hearsay, or experience with just one particular setup. If you had a 2nd gen I could tell you about the true dual system benefits and negatives as well. Every different system has it's place. The long primary's (Racing Beat streetport system) place is on the street.

Yup, I agree that the largest you should use is no more than 2.5; 3 is too loud but thats about it. Also, Just like eveyrone else, I got into the RB exhaust hype in mid 80's. Dual presielncers into a primaflow muffler. Quiet but too restrictive.

Removing the presiencers and upgrading a 2.25 inch pipes made a big difference in the LA street scenes. I also played with different mufflers. IMHO, dynomax is a junk and has an annoying high pitch noise. One of the best combo I've used is using a dual FC's 2.5" presilencers collected into a magnaflow muffler. The FC presilencer 2.5 while the FB is 2. No dyno but this is based on my experience on daily driver and street racing.

Now, I'm running a single 2.5 into a mgnaflow but I used a 4' glasspack to qiet it down. Still restricted but this is just a temp solution til I complete my blow-thru project.
