That is a grounding plug for the alternator cablng. Normally, you'll have several wires coming from the alternator going to a black plastic block that is then bolted via 12mm bolt to the side of the Dynamic Chamber, as in your picture.

It looks like your alternator has been replaced, but as long as the wires are hooked up correctly, you should be fine. This attachment point was primarily to keep the wires out of the heat directly below the intake system, and to ensure that the grounds were bolted to something solid.

Your engine bay looks pretty good for an SE - doesn't appear that your oil cooler is leaking, or we'd be seeing a lot more 'black'! HTH,

This photo shows the wiring coming off it, running over the dizzy to the left wheel well where it dives down into a main electrical trunk which runs into the firewall. There's another wire mounted just under the visible connection that runs to the "B" terminal on the alternator. The Factory Shop Manual doesn't even show the block, it just shows the wire running directly from the "B" terminal to the wiring harness on the left wheel well. So I have no idea what purpose it serves other than being an phenolic block used to join the two wires...
