What Spoiler Is This??

I'm wanting to buy a spoiler from someone I've emailed back and forth on CL about and I'm just curious as to what it is.

Is it an IMSA 3 piece original?
Or another spoiler?
What's up with the writing on it - as in, is that usual?

Thanks guys,
Austin

Looks just like the "IMSA" 3 piece I sold a while back. Is it original or a copy? I don't know, but maybe someone else will. I assume the writing represents the manufacturing date and someone's initials. Mine had it as well.

I have one that I think is original and externally it appears the same as yours, but underneath looks different. Yours is open underneath and mine is not. The ends of the center section are solid on mine and open on yours. Like I said I believe mine is original but I bought it so long ago (20 years?) that I cannot be sure.

Looks legit. The date is probably from a junkyard documenting the year of the car that it came off of. I have an original, and I'd say that if that one isn't original then it's at least close enough not to matter.

This is the factory IMSA three piece spoiler that was offered in 84/85. The date is not from a junk yard, but from Mazda, either date of manufacture or date of delivery to a dealer, etc.

Not that you need more confirmation but yes that is an original IMSA 3 piece. I have 2 of them and they are identical to your pics.

they have studs in the center section and the two side pieces screw to the center section at the rear and screw to the body at the front of the tips.

The "IMSA" 3 piece spoilers were sold by Mazda for street car use, not for actual IMSA racing. The actual IMSA spoilers were MUCH larger, and are one piece. I have one of those on my IMSA RX-7 GTU race car.

For a brief while, I believe they were used by some people in SCCA C-Production racing.

I know this is an old thread, but that is not a Mazda part. Its aftermarket. Its the exact same rear spoiler I have on my 83 LE....I installed it on the car in 85...Cant remember the manufacturers name, but it is not Mazda....good quality, good fit, but not factory.... One prob they all seem to have over time (including the one pictured) is the screw boss on the lower side of the 2 outboard pieces will crack and come aprt, letting the sides wobble....you can see whats left of the screw hole in the 5th picture...

Yeah those mounting screw holes on the side pieces are terrible, I made some brackets to hold it on more securely.

Makes sense that a third party would have produced them since they were only a dealer option, not a factory option.
