Question what is a rev limiter

when taking off from a stop at wot, trying to slam into 2nd, the engine seems to keep reving making it take more time to shift into 2nd, than a big cloud of blue smoke when it does shift (i guess omp works), i have set the dashpot down a little more but didnt cure it, could it be something with the tps or another adjustment needed, i dont want to loose to a civic si just because the car (85gsl) takes longer to shift into 2nd and 3rd.....ideas.....?

That is EXACTLY what mine did. I'd take it way up in first or second, probably about 6k, then push in the clutch and then the rpms would soar and the engine would go VROOOOOM and slowly back down, but I couldn't shift until it backed off.

I'm not sure why the engine rpms started soaring, but the reason I couldn't shift was because of the synchros -the gears must have been spinning too fast (worn synchro) to mesh.

I've never seen blue smoke or any smoke while this happened. However, maybe the smog pump has something to do with the soaring rpms, because what it's supposed to do, if I remember correctly, is keep the rpms up a little while you shift, so that they just don't drop off suddenly when you push in the clutch.

The rev limiter is simply a device which tries to kill the ignition once you exceed or come close to a certain rpm. Most newer cars have this to keep you from over reving the engine. On my Rx-7, there is no rev limiter, only a buzzer that comes on just before redline that reminds you to shift.

I hope this helps.

Sounds like a stuck or sticking carb linkage or throttle cable to me. I'd try cleaning the outside of your carb then lubing up the linkages and cable with WD-40 if I were you.

Smoking on upshifting means the oil control seals are starting to fail. Eventually the engine will smoke at idle and pretty much any time the throttles are closed.

The OMP physically can not move enough oil to cause the engine to smoke.

Mine did the same thing so I lubricated the linkage every day and it got a little better everyday until it was fine. Guess there was a lot of crud on the linkage.
