Thoughts on a project?

Ok.. I want opinions.

I have a decent GSL-SE with completey good running gear, but the paint sucks, and it has a dented fender, and a pretty decent rust problem in the storage bins...

I'm thinking of sitching bodies, but keepingthe running gear. I have found a good paint, nice body 85 for cheap to replace it with, but not quite sure how long it will take.

What am I getting myself into... How long will it take me to switch the engine/drivetrain from my -SE into this car:
http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...&ac_afflt=none

Anyone done this? It's the same year, so shouldn't have any major custom fab stuff.. I'd be doing all of this in a normal two car garage too, so not a crapload of extra storage space around....

Geez.

do it.. it is not that hard at all.. i did the same thing with my 80, swapping it into a 79 body..

i only worked on it on weekends, and usually by myself, so it took me a few weeks to do...
but i think that it can be done in one or less, depending on the amount of time and help that you have..

I work a normal 40hour work week, and would be doingit on the weekends.. I need to have this done by the end of next month if I do it, because I'm moving and I'll be in a place with just a single garage...

Man, why did I have to find that add.. That isn't anyone on here is it?

you can do it in a month, especially if you have help..
the easist thing is going to be to take out the engine and tranny as one piece.. so just drop the exhaust, disconnect the drive shaft, unhook everything that is connected to the engine (hoses and wires) clear out the radiator and everything else in front of the engine.. and then take the pupy out..

the only part you are going to have to deal with that i did not, is the ecu and all of the good stuff that goes along with efi.. like fuel pump.. you will probably want to swap the wiring harness if you can too.. i was going from a carbed body to a carbed body so i didnot have to deal with that..

I'm a bigger fan of Mt Dew... I survived many nights in college that way... Crank the stereo, and load up on sugar/caffeine... You can go for weeks

Any super nifty neato tools I'll need? (other than a hoist)

Soft drinks , or as they should be called 'hard drink's to nothing for me. I guess im ammuned to the cafeeine content

For $5.99 for 60 pills it cant be beat until you come down after 2 days of staying up. Of course go to sleep for a 4 hours feel fine, get you another bottle of pills. And then everythign is perfect again..

No special tools I see, just the regular ones standard sockets and rachets, open end wrenches... A impact wrench will help tons.

Well speaking of which im getting ready to start my 2 day stay up all nite/day extravangaza Again

Regular Mt Dew or Code Red? Code red is the **** yo, I can't get enough of that stuff! It tastes so damn good. You shouldn't have much of a problem swapping engines. Try to get in touch with 85RX7GS, he's swapping engines (12a) in his 85 as we speak. So he could give you a better idea on the time it would take. Later

Why dont you find an SA??? They are lighter.... would be funner/faster auto-crossing (I wonder how much more fun it would be?)....... Your gonna have all your suspension, from the SE to swap in anyways........ You could swap in most of you interior...... You also gonna, have to swap the cross member....... So, why not just go for somthing a little lighter???

Just a thought

yeah, that hole you saw from the wheel well went all the way thru to the storage bins on the inside.. I can stick my hand thru it on the drivers side... There is also a bunch of rust on the fenders and quarter panels. It's not shot today, but if I'm going to be building this up like I'm planning to I shoudl at least have something structurally sound to start with right?

oh, and what ever you plan on doing to your suspension, you might as well go ahead and do it....... Since, I dont think, you really want to tear the suspension down again.............. Might as well, do it once, and not twice........... Just another thought...... I dont think the exhaust, would be that hard to put on.......

so, tell me what you think.........

having holes are fun..
after i did my body swap, i drove around in it for a while befor i put the interior in.. and that ment also not having that plate that convers the shifter hole.. so i got to drive while looking at the driveshaft spin....

you cannot imagine how tempting it was to stick my hand down there and touch the spinning teath... (well, i am sure that some of you would have that urge too.. but donot)

I have had urges, to touch the fan, while it is spinning, or have a friend burn out, while I try to hold the 100 FT pounds of torqe back, by grabbing the wheels.......

yeah, I wouldn't reccommend touching the fan like that...

If I get it, I'll probably go pick it up this weekend. I'll make a nice road trip out of it, seeing as it's up in St Louis, and I'm in Dallas...

And for those who like caffeine... Try this stuff:
http://www.bawls.com/
It's the official drink of the DFW Rx7 club. Pretty good, with LOTS of caffeine

DAMn DAMN DAMN.... For those of you following this, the car I wanted is already sold... Made my decision easy.

If any of you guy come across a rust free, 84-85, black, or the dark grey color.. Keep me informed. I will do this, just a question of when. (and oh, the cheaper the better, blown engine would be great)
