What is this? Oil filter cooler?

I was looking around at engine bay pics the other night and I found these two pictures. I have never seen or heard of these before, and these two pictures are the only ones I could find of them. Can some one please give me a little more information on them.

I tried searching for it on here but because I don't know what it's called exactly I couldn't find it.

Those are pic's of the 81-85 12a oil coolers. the 79-80 had a front mounted oil cooler and the GSL-SE with the 13b had a front mounted oil cooler as well. They aren't as good as the fmoc's but if you aren't racing the car the are good enough.

Haha those are known as "beehive" oil coolers. Here is a pic of a really nice one

Cools the engine oil, and filters the oil at the same time as well. Doesn't work very well, motor runs hot. Found on 12a motors that don't have an FMOC (Front Mount Oil Cooler). I will be swapping this out with one of these

and one of these

Images are from trochoid in his writeup found here WRITEUP - CLICK ON ME. Hope this helps.

Yeah, engine coolant runs through it and is supposed to help cool the oil and keep engine temps down. Not nearly as good as the front mount oil coolers in the other models.

you are actually wrong. They put the beehive on 83-85 12A motors. 79-82 as well as the GSL-SE had the front mount.
