Muffler choice would be a matter of how much noise can you handle? How much noise before the cops pull you over The PrimaFlow is a great muffler, bolts right on. Can style? Any most straight-thru round type ranging from Ultra Flow to MagnaFlow to Apexi universal exhausts ... have a muffler shop install it. Pick up any of your import tuner type magazine and you'll find a buttload there.

Also check ebay you can get some good deals on mufflers. I got mine for under $70 that is with shipping. now getting it installed has been fun. no one wants to put a 2.5" pipe on my car from the cat back I keep getting well you know rotories take a special kind of pipe. I have gotten price range from $75 to $150. What is a good price to have this done?

They just need a pipe that will take some higher heat. With it being from the cat back, you may not even need to worry about it that much because most of the exhaust is cooled quite a bit by then, but dont quote me on that...

PS - I bet if you buy the pipe from Racing Beat, the shop might use it. RB sells it in lengths that you can buy.

When I installed my RB system, Mazdatrix sold me a length of 1/8" wall tubing for the connecting pipe. Now that's pretty thick tubing.... special even. My muffler shop guy was surprised at how tough all the parts were made.

No one ever mentions Mindtrain, so I will. The build quality is absolutely flawless, and it's THE nicest muffler you'll find for a first gen. Its 2 individual mufflers with stainless steel polished angled tips. The Racing Beat muffler just looks like a stocker to me and too small for the back of the car (IMHO, of course). I also might be biased because I have the Mindtrain full autocross exhaust on my car (I think thats still what they call it), but damn does it sound nice (FAR nicer than the RB, I've heard them both). The muffler also flows more, as its a bigger diameter (I forget off the top of my head how much bigger though). Anyway, all I'm sayin is order the free (yes free, including shipping) catalogue from Fred at Mindtrain, you won't be disappointed.

When running a Racingbeat Header and Presilencer, what is the quietest muffler that still has good flow?

Mindtrain Contact Info

I called Fred today at Mindtrain (323)931-3732--new phone number. He was polite and very helpful. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any headers for my 84 SE and isn't scheduling a production run for quite a while.

He did mention he uses the 2nd gen headers with a 2nd gen cat on his SE--both 2.5" connections. And it didn't sound like he had these either. Don't think I want that setup for my car anyways. I'm a firm believer in keeping the backpressure up for the 6 ports and maintaining that exhaust velocity, but probably not a huge difference.

I was hoping to get Mindtrain headers and use a bonze hi flow cat. Looks like I'll have to buy a racing beat unit. Hopefully this isn't a trend of not being able to find 1st gen parts and addons.

PS. I'm not trashing Mindtrain, just stating facts. Hope their situation improves. It's also hard to get a polite and knowlegable person on the phone.

The big difference between Mindtrain and Racing Beat is the fact that Mindtrain is a one man operation... Don't worry, from what I hear, he's not hurting one bit.... I've got his cat back system on my car... I love it. It's basically three stainless steel "glasspack" style mufflers... and if you don't know what you're looking at, it'll still pass as "stock"... If you're doing header, high flow cat, and everything else, I'd be wary of using a "5zigen", or any other kind of muffler you'd find on a Honda/acura... they are not built for the abuse that an rx7 exhaust goes through... extreme heat.. backfires... NOISE.... Just my .02

I just ordered the Monza muffler from Victoria British to see how it compares with the mazdatrix muffler i put on the 83 (which I think sounds gorgeous). The monza will go into the 85 with a bonerz cat when i get a round tuit.

Why did I switch when I like the mazdatrix? I dunno. Just fooling around, I guess. If it doesn't work I'll pull it.

I've heard - but only heard - that the Monza mufflers have about a 1 year life span

I've been using an apexi n1 copy for about 6 months. I bought it off eBay for $60. 2.5" inlet, 3.5"tip, all stainless, straight through. With the silencer in, it takes the noise down quite a bit. I have the stock manifold, gutted cats, no presilencer, and this muffler. It's loud without the silencer in, but with it in, it's fine, not very loud.
