New Guy w/ Q re: Emissons Removal
First off let me say that I am really impresed with this forum and the depth of knowledge exhibited. Hats off to the administration and the members.
I am new to the RX scene, I usually drive an Audi TT. As much as I like the car I don't like the idea of beating it up at the track. That's why I got my RX-7. It is a 1985 GS, auto. It must have a late build date because I seem to find as much in the Haynes 86-92 as I do in the 79-85. I am currently replacing the engine with a 1982 12A and putting in a new manual transmission, RB exhaust, etc..
My question - in the passenger footwell are 2 control units of some sort. I think the larger one is for the emissions. It is mfg. by Mitsubishi, and is about 6" square. I have removed the Spaghetti Bowl on top of the engine. Is this unit for the emissions, and can I remove it? What about the wiring that plugs into it?
The other box is about 3" square and is also some kind of control unit. I don't see either one of these in the Hayne's for 1985. However in the Haynes 1986 it shows a Emissions CPU (the large box?) and a theft deterrent system (the small box?) Can it be removed? The wiring?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not sure what the boxes are myself, as my '79 has no such thing. However, the factory manual for the 85 model year is online at:
http://www.wankel.net/~krwright
That should identify the boxes.

I read your email
Welcome to the rx7club forum! I guess you can say this is the equivalent of the audiworld forum for RX-7's! You've come the right place!
The Spaghetti Bowl you speak of is affectionately referred to 'round these parts as the "rats nest". There is a nice tutorial on how to remove it in this thread entitled Emissions (Rats Nest) Removal Tutorial. There are also tons of other threads on the subject. Do a search on "rats nest" and you'll find 'em all. Sorry, but I can't help ya with the control boxes. Good luck with your rex!
Edit: Here's another link with PDF's of manuals: http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7parts.htm

Thanks guy's.
Found the manuals that show those parts. Will have to study the schematics to see where the wiring goes, maybe find why it would affect start up.
