****...Theres a lot of different models. Anyone want to compse a "good list" of all of them, where they were from, and what years they were made? I would do it, but I dont know enough about all the different ones. Maybe someone could start a list, then others could just add to it or edit it as it goes along?

US models addition...

GSL is '81-85 only. (Optional leather, standard 4-wheel disc and LSD along with power doodads)
There is the LS ('80 only) which is Leather Sport (special rims, leather interior)
And the LE ('83 only) which is various goodies (need help) and the 4x110 pattern 14" rims. Foglights maybe? I remember something Denny was telling me about getting a factory foglight switch, think it was from an LE.
and isn't there an anniversary edition in '83 as well?

In the US '79-80 is Series 1 (SA)
'81-83 is Series 2 (FB)
'84-85 is Series 3 (also FB)

Won't go into the differences here, except that '83 was kind of a hermaphrodite year... some of the S3 changes were made in '83, like different driveshaft/driveshaft bolt pattern, much lighter rotors in the engine, the awful water/oil cooler... think there's something else too. Oh yeah the clutch changed size too.

Ok, I'll give this a shot. Here's what I know about the Japanese lineup.

RX-7's are introduced in 1978 as "Savanna RX-7's". It appears that mechanically all the cars where similar (drum rears, open diff, fender mirrors). Major differences between models are limited to paint jobs and interior trim levels). The interior of these cars is very similar to the US SA's. The line up in 78 is:

"GT " Fully loaded SA available with leather (luxury model). Available in many colors.

"Limited" Limited production models that feature funky paint jobs and 2 tone, plaid twill interiors. Available in Mica green, Yellow and Red.

"Custom and Super Custom" Dont know much about these. I assume they where the "regular" cars with custom and super custom reflecting their flexible option packages.

In 1980, the new models arrive. The revamped Savanna RX-7's now have the molded bumpers and available rear disks. Rotor shaped wheels are also availbale. This model change resembles the US "SA to FB" changes in 81. Models include the "GT", the "S-GT" and the "SE-limited". I beleive the SE-limited was the new top end model with disks all around, rotor wheels, lsd and 12A (similar to our 81-83 GSL). All these models still sport the fender mounted mirrors.

In 1983, the 12A turbo GT-X is added to the lineup. It's basically a US GSL-SE with the SE wheels, brakes and diff. It also has the SE steering wheel and shifter, but the dash and gauge cluster is the same as the 81-83 US FB's. This model (and probably all others) now have door mounted mirrors.

Japan never saw the FI 13B 1st gen. It appears that model was only offered in the US as an alternative to the more powerful (but less emissions friendly) 12A turbo. 13B RX-7's appeared in Japan with the introduction of the 1985 "new" Savanna RX-7 (2nd gen).

Hope this helps out with the model compilations .

Woa! That's an EXTREMELY nice car you've got there. It's even got the side flashers and the headlamp washer jets!!! Would you happen to have a picture of the switch that activates those jets? I've got the jets, but I don't have the switch. TIA.

I forgot to add that I'm aiming to get that look, with the side flashers and the headlamp jets and the spoiler. Anyone have some side flashers?

Count me in for 2.

I have a 1979 S model, I picked up to restore. Car has lots of miles 186k however only about 15k on new motor. Price = Free to a good home.

I also purchased a 1984 GSL-SE. Price = $500 Car has reasonable amount of miles about 100k, new Tokicos and CFDF clutch. It needs an engine however. Lucky me I have a nice 4 port 13B in my shed.

Also - I currently own a 1989 GTU, 1991 Coupe. In the past I have owned a 1986 GXL and a 1986 Sport.

Am I qualified ?

Thanks, its my first Rx7 needs a few bits sorting before I'm happy with it

I've not got any pictures of the washer switch but its built into the manual headlight pop up button

If i remember correctly you push the headlight pop up button to the first postion and the headlights pop up then you press it back again against a spring for the wash functio.

The switch is fitted to the centre console just infront of the gear stick and next to the heater rear screen switch

I have a picute of it in a broshure ... I'll try and get it scanned if that will help

Hmm, mine is a US 85 GS and the headlamp pop-up switch is up to the left of the speedometer cluster with the hazard lights. It only has two positions, in for the headlights up and out for the headlights down. I wonder if there is a version made for the 85 style interior? Anyone know?

i got my gsl-se for free ... well i traded my mint condition yellow 79(limited) with leather interior. it blew an engine seal, orignal engine, and the gears were fucked in the rear axel. i was so happy to get that 13b engine, untill i found out that the guy street ported the 79 and made it a gsl.

I have the very rare, prototype SGSGSL-SE-LE Ferrari-x7.

Came stock with 15" MotoForm wheels, 12" wooden steering wheel, rear hatch louvers, Testarossa side fins, front and rear fascia, and 10" tall whale tail wing.

Of course, I opted for the only available option, the chrome fender accents.

Before settling on the name "SGSGSL-SE-LE Ferrari-x7" they toyed with the name RX-7 PB.

Of course, PB is short for, yup.....you guessed it. Pep Boys.

Well, I would love to have a GSL-SE, or even a GSL- but my hieght (6ft 5) makes having an RX7 wihtout a sunroof important for me to even fit. I looked for 2nd gen RX7 SEs/GTus without sunroofs, just to see if I could fit because I know I can't fit in sunroof equiped models, but never even found one to try.
I have been looking for a year for a 1st/2nd gen RX7 with no sunroof and in very good mechanical shape and in my price range (under 2k$) and not embarrasing to be seen in. They are very hard to find. But even with the extra headroom, I need to watch for high speed bumps- I hit my head againt the headliner.

Just curious, on 1st gens were sunroofs standard on GSLs and GSL-SEs? Every one I have ever seen had one, so I was wondering.
