I have been looking for a year for a 1st/2nd gen RX7 with no sunroof and in very good mechanical shape and in my price range (under 2k$) and not embarrasing to be seen in. They are very hard to find. But even with the extra headroom, I need to watch for high speed bumps- I hit my head againt the headliner.

Just curious, on 1st gens were sunroofs standard on GSLs and GSL-SEs? Every one I have ever seen had one, so I was wondering.

84 GSL-SE, 160k miles. Well used.

The fb mailing list has a high proportion of -SE owners too, for the same reasons as previously stated, IMO.

Proud owner of a '79 GS model, fully loaded with all options except sun roof. It's a good thing too, because I wouldn't fit with my helmet on if I had the roof and my FC seats installed. My '79 is a bit of a Franken-rex, with a '81 electronic dizzy, '86 FC seats, '81 GSL axle and LSD and '81-'85 alloy wheels. The odo reads 105980 miles.

I have a GSL-SE... 79K miles, purchased last year from the original west coast owner. All original: No power steering, mirrors that match the white body, glass roof, no leather. I'm planning to add white powder coated wheels next year.

Mine's an '85 GSL limited edition (ie: NOT 13B-powered, but with all GSL options plus power steering. This one's originally from California so no headlight washer jets. (Even the SE in the US didn't have these--- only in Canada, Australia, Europe...)
My other three were '81 and '82 GX's. (only the '82 and '83 actually had the GX badge, but the '81 was identical otherwise) That's what GSL's were called in Canada until the '84's came out.
At the time they were the top of the line 7 (no SE yet) and came standard with sunroof, washer jets, LSD, power everything, and 4-wheel discs (solid at rear). Only items considered optional were leather and air. Power steering was not available until '84 (and then only in the states) as far as I know.

All of the GSL's and GSL-SE's came with sun roofs, but the optional smoked glass roof panel provides more approx. 1 inch (2-1/2) cm more headroom than the stock uphoulstered one does.
This may still be a problem if the top of your head touches right on the perimiter of the sunroof frame, since the clearance provided by the glass panel only extends to its own dimensions.
I wonder if any of the aftermarket racing seats provide a lower seating position...
