It does this while the engine is running?

Mine would do that when my Alternator belt would break while going down the road...

My guess is that the ECU must get it's source of input from the alternator. When the alternator fails, the ECU says, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"

Just a guess though, there is no proof behind my theory....

The computer man. It's not as smart as the ones in today's cars, but it's there. Not sure how much it controls, but I'm pretty sure the red warning lights is one of them.

the 12a cars dont have an ecu. I dont know why, but if your alternator isnt working (blet broken or whatever else could go wrong with it) all the idiot lights turn on.

check your alternator. (is it pluged in, belt intact, bearing not frozen)

Hi Guys,
I'm getting the same thing, my lights all light up and then dissapear. I'm about to go and change my Alternator belt, you can see it move side to side when the engine is running. I'll let you know how it goes.

they should all start up while your cranking the engine, and then turn off when it starts running

Check the metal-housed relay in the front driver's side of the car, its close to the windsheild. Mine came out of the metal casing, and caused the idiot lights to come on.

The alternator belt broke going down the highway in a 12A on me once, all the lights on the bottom of the dash lit up.

So yeah,

My 1983 12A has a computer module. What distinct purpose it serves other then ODB I diagnostics (the engine light, whee) is lost on me however.

The module is in the remnant of my locking cubby-things, on the drivers side. Not that I really have much of that left.

A check engine light, as far as I knew, only came into use *with* a computer module. Before it was all listening to the engine, and seeing rods get thrown through the hood or the pistons seizing, right?

Hey,
I changed the belt but they still all flash up. I'll have to start chasing up some electronics now.

Yea the 12A's dont really have an ECU, if they did it would be below the floor board on the passenger side but I think the SE's are the only ones that have them. because the 12A is carbeurated and of course the 13B is fuel injected.

Go look under that kick, pannel and you'll be in for a surprise.

Every RX-7 had some sort of ECU. Even the 79's. It has no diagnostics whatsoever, which is why first gens dont have a check engine light, (you can pull codes from a GSL-SE, but it still doesnt have a check engine light) and its there to control the emissions system, and cycle the air conditioning, thats it. The non SE ecus are more or less just a relay box however.
