What exhaust should I get?
I have about $400 to spend on an exhaust system for my 81 street ported 12a engine. Emissions is not a pr0blem where I live. It can also be louder than stock but not too loud. What should I get and whats good and whats not?
I need to get the whole system, header, muffler, and everything between!

Why does everyone automatically say Racing Beat? Over here you go to any number of good experienced exhaust shops and have them bend up a custom system for your car for a hell of a lot cheaper. Just make sure you use thick wall tubing and good stainless steel packed straight through mufflers/resonators. The primaries should be long as possible.

I agree, you can make em, just like you could "make" headers, but why?
If you have no choice... then go custom.

I will show you the header when its done. It is some pipes my friends dad had at his shop. They are 3 inches big and a 1/4 inch thick VRUUUM VRUMMM VRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMM POP POP STUDER POP When I get it next weekend, I will run it without a header to see if a rotary is as loud as people say Plus I want to show my friend that a rotary with open exaust is louder than v8 with open exaust at 5000 rpm

REVHEAD is right though, if you could "copy" a good product for much less, then why not.
Plenty of Mi*soft products around that way...
If the exhaust shop is familiar with Rotaries needs,
then more power to you.

Well it seemed like a good idea to me, so I made my friend do it Its almost done. I dont see why it would hurt it, I asked if a rotary needs back pressure, and the answer was , back pressure is a myth, so any size pipe that can flow will work I still have no clue as of why a rotary needs to have a 2 1/4 piping, Should'nt be any different than 3 inches. Any answers???

As one exhaust discharge is sent through the pipe,
It creates a Vacuum behind it, to help the next
exhaust discharge follow it out, and so on, and so on.
If the pipe it too large, it will not have enough of a
vacuum effect and not really be of too much use.
(like the factory manifold).
It will be like running open header/exhaust, which is
not too good for rotaries, and no real help.
Maybe someone else could explain it better.

Oh well, I will sell it, then buy a street port rb header, for my EFI, when I start playing with it Thanx Laterz, Andrew

dont go rollin around the block with the engine and no manifold on it,
if you need to prove a point the take off the manifold when your doing your exhaust and rev it a couple of time,
trust me just starting it will make him get the picture.
i had to move my car with the header off and it was so loud me and a couple buddies opted to push it instead.

contact RotorMotorDriver PM him
tell him v8kilr sent you.
he has the header you need at an excellent price.
well i take it back its a pretty good used price.
now you need the pipe and muff,
i sugest a presilencer from racing beat,
then go custom bent 2.50 stainless steel pipe to a muff,
you choose the muff just make sure its
stainless steel,
steel packed,
straight through design,
has lifetime warranty
your all set,
you really dont need the presilencer but it will help to keep it quite, plus it doesnt take away any hp.
racing beat sells a long presilencer and a short one
i run the short with above setup
because of the custom pipe and diferent muffler this will be louder then the rb setup.
the rb setup uses thick wall steel which you could use but i found it is very expensive to find and get a shop to bend it,
so chances are you will be using plain old stainless steel which will have a higher interior resonance
remember it has to go over the rear wheel well.
the muff will be louder for obvious reasons.
by my calculations this setup should run you around $300 thats if you buy a good muffler,
i would spend around $130.00 and up.
dont forget your gonna need to contact racing beat for the gaskets,
header to engine
header to midpipe/or presilencer.
i have a good used header to engine gasket if you need it.
the above estimate includes everything but the presilencer,
buy it used and you will save a ton.

I suggest you don't waste your money on any of the "Pace Setter" crap from a JC Whitney catalog either, or else their "bolt-on" package will have you going to a custom muffler shop just to make it fit!

And when the headache subsudes from all of the "fiddle f**king" around you are going to do trying to find everything you need, you will end up with a set up that is not that great, and will probably have spent just as much money on your custom set-up as the Racing Beat set-up. Unless you have an exhaust shop that knows their ****, buy something that has already been through thousands of people.
I don't agree with the "custom setup" because I had one made using a Magnaflow muffler. The muffler was awsome but, I used the local hod rodder recomended exhaust shop, accutually one of the more reputable places in the city and the system fell appart after only six months.
If you are on a bubget then buy in peices. Start with header and the pre-silencer, as they will yeild the largest performance increase. The 12a header and presilencer from Racing Beat can be had at you door for around $300. And it comes with everything you need, so no "fiddle f**king" around. It shows up, 1 hour later you neighbors hate you and plants fall by the way side!!!
Just my oppinion.

i pay for my setup less that $200 ($187. to be exact) and i have a 2.25'' inch pipe goin now from the front of the engine (with the cat on) to the rear to a dinomax muffler. mean while the racing beat exaust the muffler only is $237. and is 2'' pipe. but is my opinion.

Alright, I see what you guys are saying. Makes sense that if you can get the Racing Beat stuff for almost the same price then that's definately the way to go.
BTW, when I was looking around for a system awhile ago I got a quote for the full RB setup just for the hell of it. $1700AUD!! Now compare that to $600 which is what I payed for my setup. That's a full system consisting of equal length mandrel bent headers, a hand made stainless steel muffler and all necessary flanges. That includes fitting and a 5 year waranty.
