What does your 1st Gen. Top out at? Is mine OK?

I'm just curious as to what speed my car should be able to reach (1982 GSL). I can't get it past 110 even with just me in the car on a straight-away. Not that I need to, it just seems like it should do more.
Mods include K&N filter with Cold air intake, No A/C belt (not that much of a difference), both cats replaced with RB straight pipe, factory Nikki rebuilt enough to not be the problem (acc. pump, etc.) Jacob's energy coils, NGK wires & plugs, That's about all I cak think of that I did that would help top end. I'd rate acceleration at about 60% of what I would expect it to be too. (I don't race much at all, but I lost a drag to a '90 Cadillac Sevile.) Oil pressure is very good (I think, usually around 65-70 lbs. while accel.) I'm probably the problem with acceleration, but is the engine just that tired with the Top end issue? Thanks-

could be many things. check your fuel filter that was my problem, and try the ATF treatment to get a little more compression and clean it up a bit.. hope that helps

ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid

Purchase some ATF and new spark plugs from local parts store.

Pour some ATF through the carburetor or straight into the spark plug holes. (easier to do it through the carburetor)
Make sure you hand crank the engine so you can get ATF on each facing of the rotars.

Let is sit for as little as 2 hours or up to 24 hours. (the latter is recommended).

Start the car. You will see a crap load of smoke! LOTS OF SMOKE. It's best to start it during the evening so
people don't call the fire department on you, for you car smoking. (Make sure no one is parked behind you, I made this mistake and had ATF all over the car behind me... ) Now rev it up a few times to get the initial ATF out of the engine. Then drive the car pretty hard on the highway so the secondaries open up and you can
blow the rest of the ATF out.

Final step is put the new spark plugs in, because the old ones will look like crap.

also should you pour in a little bit, crank engine (by hand) then pour in some more?

I haven't done this yet either, so i was wondering too!

they said 2 oz, i used 1 qt atf and 1 qt marvel mystery oil. probably a little over kill but the more you can soak the engine the better. before you fire it up pull the leading plugs and spin the motor to slosh any excess fluid out. put the plugs back in and fire it up. let it run for a bit and warm up then take it to the highway and toast it up. when you feel as if you've burned off most all of it, go home and put your new plugs in.

the atf eats carbon deposits, etc so it helps clean the engine and loosen the seals to help them seat better.

I dunno the exact speed I top out at, the speedo pins in third gear (stupid 85MPH one), but the other day I walked the car all the up to redline in fifth. I know that's in water pump cavitation territory, but it wasn't for long. So whatever speed that works out to be....is my top end

Buried the needle on the speedo which, with the overage they seem to have, would be about 125 mph or so. The car hits 110 easily on drives to work when I need it. If your cats are history, start your rex on an MMO diet immediately. The stuff is great. Check your timing. You may have it advanced too much for high-end power. Check all the linkage around the carb. Could be your secondaries aren't opening up all the way and creating an air restriction. See Sterling's tome in the archives on the best way to mod that carb for more go....

Yes

I totally agree. That is also why you want to have it sit more than 2 hours that some people recommend. I would let it soak for entire day.

You should probably do this if you do not have a stright pipe exhaust. Just make sure you cover the inside of the engine bay with something, because ATF can eat paint.

If you do then don't worry about it, because it will just be pushed out anyways and won't have a place to collect.

According to a moderator, resident evil genius and at-that-time anti-rice superstar whom I shall not name, MMO with its long link molecules will eventually clog the cats. I couldn't understand why oil, with its long molecules wouldn't do the same, but, honestly, I didn't read it thoroughly when I saw the thread because the logic was crazy...

Hey, I'm the only anti-rice superstar that I'm aware of and I never said anything about clogging converters
