Ok well we found this thing just sitting out in this persons yard. It doesnt run and the paint is pretty bad. It hasnt been run for 5 years. Im looking to buy it to do a total rebuild(new housings, new rotors, new everything pretty much). They want 750 for it but I know its not worth more than 500. What should I point out to them besides the fact that it doesnt run and looks pretty bad?

Save it! If the there is mini or no body rust by the cargo bins, and you have the time to rebuild it, I say go for it.

(P.S. I wouldn't give them the $750)

Exactly All work to be done by myself.
I went to Kelly Blue Book online and it only valued it as being worth about 480, and that was with me putting it in fair condition which means it runs, but it doesnt, so really, they should just give me the damn thing

Oh by the way, which model has leather seats, and no sunroof? The car is an 80, i think.

I bet the car's a GS (only S and GS models before 1983, if i'm not mistaken). I looks like its pretty good structurally, but definitely check for that telltale rust under the storage bins first. As for price, I'd offer 'em something in the 200-400 dollar range, and then bargain from there. 750 is definitely too high for a car that hasn't run for 5 years.

for what its worth - I picked up a '84 GS w/ no rust that had been sitting for a while. Wasn't sure if it ran and it needed some bodywork in the rear (bumper, tailights, etc). I gave the guy $100 and within an hour of having it home we had it running (sorta).

I'd offer no more then $350 for the car pictured above since it is a SA and the body looks pretty straight.

Don't insult them, but $750 greenbacks is a bit high.

Cost of engine $5,000? You can get a rebuilt one for far, far less... ported (if desired) and with a 1 year warranty

Paid $250 for mine, and drove it home... You arent taking in account the fuel system, gas tank and several other things that are probalyl WAY WAY gone.

Also keep in mine a junkyard would give her $100 for it. So go armed with $250 cash and a trailer, if they dont take that keep looking...

Kinda strange. Was the car originally black? I thought that only special edition 79's came in that color....The 4-speed and steel rims definely mean its an "S" though unless someone swapped the driveline and wheels

I can get an engine from Pineapple racing for just under $3000. This a very nice streetport, with lightened rotors, an upgrated oil pump, guaranted 220Hp(at the flywheel) with a 2 yr, 36000 mile warrenty.

UPDATE!

I went to talk to the lady again with the kelly blue book print off in my hand. I offered her 300 in cash. Her responce even when pointed out that it was listed as 500 running was, "NOPE, NO WAY, SORRY!" So i laughed and said "okidokie see ya later". In retrospect I wish i would have told her that she would never get 750 for that car and it would sit for another 5 years. Oh well

Yes, what hybridracer says is true. I was there, the lady was a total bitch about it. I think it's sad she wouldn't even take 300, cause i know for a fact i would only give her 100 bucks for it...just my honest opinion.

OH well, we'll find another one. San Antonio
