What do you think about this engine? (pic)

Saw this engine on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting

sounds good and everything, except that as somebody pointed out to me, the alternator seems to belong to a 79 engine, and the distributor to an '81. Plus It doesn't have the beehive oil cooler. And there is another auction by this seller where he is selling a 13B, but it has the same photo! So I sent the seller an e-mail asking him about the pic being the same than the 13B auction, and he replies:

"They both look the same that is the actual engine. lees than 30K original miles.
thank you
thank you"

Gimme a break. Then I asked him to send me pics of the exhaust/intake manifold, and he said he would, 3 days ago, but hasn't. I also said I could go take a look at it since I'm in the area, and he said no customers allowed in their warehouse (???) What do you guys think about this engine? anybody dealt with this seller before? should I report his *** to eBay?

Lets look at this logically. When was the last 12a produced? Yep 1985. Low miles over a 19 year period? Hmmm, well in Japan maybe, however, driving in Japan is a stop and go affair, rarely do you get the opportunity to open it up. What is the largest killer of rotary engines..... yep, carbon. Why does carbon build up? Yep, lots of idling and stop and go. If it isnt carbon built up then it was in a street racers car (doubtfull it doesnt look it) so it stands a good chance of being beat to hell. Next, the price he is asking.... thats a lot of money for a used engine and how can he gaurantee is runs good? I couldnt tell by the dust and the cut radiator hoses... And to top it all off he is avoiding you, not letting you see the product etc etc etc, all of this equals "stay the hell away" You can rebuild an engine on your own for about half that price and then you know exactly what you have. IMHO

That is pretty high... But he does have a good deal on a 20B, he has two actually..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2459656565

And looking through his profile he is just an importer, he probably gets shipments from japan containing a random assortment of engines and he just takes the tags they put on the engine and posts then on ebay. He probably just doesn't know the difference between a 12a and 13B or even a 20B or the difference between any of the engines he sells..

His feedback looks good...the one guy that complained just sounds frustrated because of lack of communication...overseas shipment tracking ain't too great, I understand. It's not the same as UPS or FedEx over here..little pricey, though...for 400 more clams, a rebuilt keg can be had in most places by a reputable builder...

Thanks guys for all the feedback, and the links. Indeed my plan was to get either a 12AT or get a 12A in good condition and turbo it. So we're in the same page. If anybody has any more suggestions as to where to get them, preferably in California, please do let me know. As for this guy on Ebay, I don't think I'll buy from him.

Yes thanks I have been in touch with Robert on this. He won't have a 12AT for a couple of months, but if I get a stock 12A, will turbo it for me.

Any other suggestions anyone?

I would suggest that you do not purchase a used rotary in that price range.

I did notice that is had a dual alternator pulley though.

EBay sellers sometimes arent that reliable, especially on an item like an engine. My experience shows a lot of people flake out after the acution is closed. BOO EBAY!!!!! HORRAY CRAIGS LIST! www.craigslist.org

The alternator is right for the era BTW, although Im not sure I see ignitors on the side of that dizzy, so I dunno, lol. Either way, I think hes CRAZY for trying to sell it for that much. Dont go for it.

Thanks for the replies and thoughts guys. I'm definitely not going for it. Conversely, I need to find a suitable engine for my car pronto! and still nothing...

Well it does seem a bit distasteful to me. Sponsorship? Not to my knowledge, I haven't seen a banner ad for Rotaryshack. Oh well, I'm sure robert @ rotaryshack would put a stop to it if he knew his good name was being whored out like this. He should really consider becoming a sponser and advertising on the forum. I'm sure he would agree that advertising on such a busy forum with a targeted audience would be good for business.

Guys, whatever you do, DO NOT do business with Robert at Rotary Shack!! He screwed myself and two others. If he decides to send your parts it won't be for 8months to a year later. He screwed Demetiros K. (Reactive Racing) out of engine parts as well as $1000 cash. Robert is as shady as they come. I've delt with many shops in my day and believe me this guy is a poor excuse for a business man or "man" in general. The only thing that ever comes out of his mouth is bullshit!
