Angry What do you do when...?

...you're taking your engine apart and the front cover bolt will not come loose and you end up rounding the head of the bolt off with your 19mm socket? Oh gee, what to do now...

Anybody ever had this problem? Any ideas?

Thanks

vise grips or maybe a sae(inches) 6 point socket that is a little smaller than 19mm or maybe file some flat sides on the bolt if possible

I've busted a 19mm socket try to take the crankshaft bolt off. I also rounded the bolt in the process.

I had to bring my car to my garage and he took it off with an impact wrench. He did not have any problems taking it off.

spray some penetrant around it and let it soak. then go for the vise grips. some people heat them up but i would think chilling it would help. bring it down to almost freeze to get everything to shrink and that should loosen the threads a bit. maybe heat it then freeze it. take the vise grips and loosen then tighten will heated and then again while its cold.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

So far I've busted one socket, a 3/8 ratchet(didn't like it anyways), and even bent my flywheel brace trying to get this ******* bolt off.

I thought about trying to fit a smaller socket but it's kinda hard to get to the bolt with anything other than the socket really. I tried the impact thing, but don't have one powerful enough. The heating and freezing thing sounds interesting, I may have to try that. I could try and take it to a shop, I'm not sure though if anyone around here would have the right tools though. Besides, I hate explaining to rednecks that no, it's not a 4 cylinder.

Oh well, if I can't get it off soon, I might have to attack the front cover with the blue wrench.

That's what I was going to suggest. It's just like when you can't get a spark plug out. You let the car run and heat up the surrounding metal. Then you can usually pull it out with ease...I'm pretty sure there is some type of science lesson here that I should be reciting.

The 19mm on this cosmo motor was a bitch, Ive never seen a bolt this snap 3/4" impact wouldnt bust off. if its rounded take it somewhere like a machine shop, but if it bothered me bad enough here I cut the bastard off, once you get the bolt head off the threads arent a serious problem

i have never had any luck with heat,
here is my winning combination

p.b. blast penetration spray
gator grip socket on 1/2" drive wrench

or if its a real bitch and totally gone so you know you already have to buy an new bolt,
this is only if you can get to the bolt with the parts,

get a 4" grinder and a thin cutting wheel and cut two lines adjacent to each other,

now go back at it with the gator grip socket,

good luck

If you have access try drilling a hole in the center and using an easy out with some penetrating oil

My socket set has a enlarged rounded corners so that it grabs nuts by their sides, not corners... not that it's really any help to you now...

But it's somthing you might want to consider investing in for the future. Mine's a pro-series set from Canadian Tire, but I heard that it's the same thing as the high-end Sears Craftsman stuff down in the States...

Ok, I finally got that damn bolt off. It took nothing short of actually WELDING a 19mm impact socket to it and hitting it with a big *** impact, though! Piece a sh*t.

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions, and exactly what is a gator grip socket?
