What do all the abbrivations stand for?

Hey everyone, I am stumped and I know that everyone can answer this question for me since I am new to the RX world. I have tried to go thru the FAQ's and (not sure if I over looked it) I can not find anywhere that explains what all of the abbrivations mean. Mainly like S4, S5 and all of that.

In case the questions come up, I just picked up an '83 GSL really cheap that had a bunch of mods done already. I am trying to clean it up and add some more, so learning these abbrivations will help alot.

Thanks in advance for everyones help.

There is a key guide out there for them. Did you look at the registry and sign it?

Your 1983 is a 1st Generation Rx7 "FB" if you look at your VIN you'll see an FB code. GSL is grand sport limited and it was the top model in 83.

You know that is a pretty good question.
Let me see if I can get the answer right. I am going to give just a bit more than you asked for to help explain.

Body Series
The 79-80 Rx7 have an SA in the vin number, so they are called SA
1981 is when the vin code for Rx7s changed to an FB, this remained through 1985.
1986 through 1992 (this is 91 or 92) have the vin code FC
1993 and on were FD

Engine Series code is what you are asking about is
SA had the S1 engine
FB has the S2 engine
FB with the 13B was a S4
FC through 1988 ½ was a S4
Later FCs were S5
FD were S6

From the FAQ ( https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/1st-gen-rx-7-faq-page-237777/ )

Q. What's all this talk about SA, FB, FC, FD's? and what about S1, S2, S3
A. In short, it's all about VIN numbers.
Check out this thread entitled fb, fc, f-me I'm confused (which also answers about the S* designations)
Here's a cool page called Alphabet Soup & Vehicle Identification

Wow, that's wrong.
SA - 79-80 is S1
FB - 81-83 is S2, 84-85 is S3

FD - 93-95 were S6, 96-98 were S7, 99-02 were S8.

Stupid me didnt bother to look at the vin to even get a hint I guess I was just too excited when I picked up the car.

From what I can tell so far is: I have an 12a motor, GSL model and the car has a bunch of upgrades on it already. Came with full cat-back magnaflow exhaust, tokicko n/a shock (not sure what kind of springs), full roll cage, 205/60/13 Toyo RA1's (unsure brand of rim). The previous owner had it for x-cross

I cant wait to get it out there, but I still want to change up a few things, so that is why I wanted to know teh abbrivations.

The following link is from the FAQs in the 2nd gen forum. It covers the abbreviations quite well. Helps to get the facts and not rely on failing memories or 'I think". In my sig line are some other links to the online FSMs, carb manual, etc..

there's been a lot of debate as to what S, GS, GSL, and GSL-SE do in fact stand for. i have seen no literature breaking down the letters into words and i personally think that they're just letters and don't mean the common, S-Sport, GS-Gran Sport, GSL-Gran Sport Luxury, and GSL-SE-Gran Sport Luxury Sports Edition. i could be wrong but this is how i feel based on the lack of supporting literature produced by mazda. if someone has such literature i would love to see it.
