what difference a good clutch makes!!
I've always been a little disappointed with the performance of a stock first gen....but DAMN!! what a difference a new performance clutch makes!
I'm glad my clutch blew out when it did.
With my new clutch I almost instantly take off the line. My acceleration is obviously much better, speed has drastically improved, but going uphills is still a bitch. All of this of course is due to almost no slippage. I did have some trouble controlling the clutch (stalling or burning rubber) but its all a matter of getting used to it. My second day with this clutch and I can now sit in traffic and take off softly without peeling any rubber!
This is my first performance upgrade and MANY more will definitely follow. I was having a bitch of a time getting used to my new clutch, but I think I've finally pulled it off.
I don't have any experience with other clutches but I would recommend Racing Beat clutches to anyone any day. And to top it off... you can't beat the price...even if you are in Canada!
I was looking to spend at least $900cdn with CPRacing's clutch and flywheel....and here with Racing Beat's Clutch/Pressure Plate and Flywheel I walked away with spending only $640cdn and that included new throw-out bearings and the front/rear transmission seals being redone professionally.
I think I'm gonna be really happy for the next couple of months at least until I take it to the next step: a complete Racing Beat exhaust system....and hopefully by that time I'll have converted to a direct fire ignition system.
Here's EXACTLY what was upgraded:

1983-92 RX-7 (Non-turbo)
Street/Strip Heavy Duty Clutch Disc

1983-85 12A
Street/Strip Pressure Plate (Non-Turbo)

And my flywheel was pretty damn near to Racing Beat's own Flywheel (but in my opinion the one I got was much better....beautifully machined...I could literally see my reflection in it) Lightweight Steel Flywheel
1983-85 12A engines
Thanks for your ears!! (or EYES I should say)

Drifter: No man, no upgrades at all. You just feel the difference once you get going. You know it's better because it feels better!!

I have an really good clutch and pressure plate for 79-82 12a's for sale in the parts forum if anyone is interested. I was told it came out of an 83 but it didn't so I can't use it. has about 200 miles on it grabs like mad not a RB but i think it is atleast as good, had it custom built at a local clutch factory. And yes a good clutch does make an incredible difference! I had to work for a second with my stock setup and now I get thirds.

I kind of had the same experiance. My slave cylinder decided to blow up on me, so i got a new one, and bled the system really well, and holy crap it felt so much better. There was massive amounts of air in the lines before, but now its all so much better.

215k miles and its still going strong?? holy ****!
I have a friend who's a real awesome mechanic, who doesn't "care for rx7's", but mentioned that it sounds like my engine's "tired"? Personally I don't think it's doing too bad.
I thought my engine had some kind of a major oil leak but I'm pretty sure that its all just coming from my oil cooler (O-Rings) and the damn filter that sits atop it.
Otherwise, she sounds healthy enough to me and the miles on your car makes me feel a lot better about mine (phew!). This is hearsay, but I've heard that if rotaries are well maintained, they can go up to 500k miles no problem?
So what do you have for performance parts on your car?

i can tell my engine doesn't have a whole lot of time left, but i'm going to keep it alive at least until i can find a deal on a replacement.
i actually just got the car last weekend - it's bone stock. i don't know if i want to fix it up any besides fixing what's broken. i really like the way it drives now. tho a racing beat exhaust system does sound tempting.
