What did this engine come out of??

Well i just got in my jspec engine from japan2la for my 85 rx7. Well the engine has alot of differnences from my old one. First it dosent have the under oil filter oil cooler...it has the lines running for a front mount oil cooler. The distributor is way different than mine, this one looks to be a points distributor with only two wires and a single two wire plug with one vac port. also it has some smaller holes in the housings under where the main exhaust ports are. does anyone know what this engine came out of or are these just some common differences between usdm and jspec??

thanx

I don't have any knowledge of the jdm options, but if that was a usdm motor I would say it is a 79-80.

your distributor will swap onto this motor, and upgrading to a front mount oil cooler is a good idea anyway

check the spark plug holes if doesn't have "eye brows" like your series 3, then yes I would agree 79 - 80, but 80 didn't have points dizzy in the US only 79 did. It also sounds like they were running the oil cooler up front like a SA or GSL-SE, sounds like a better way to go

Sounds like 79 SA in all respects, so far.

Without pictures, it's all guesswork, though.

No camera on your cellphone?

small holes near exhaust ports == thermal reactor

no eyebrows == SA

front mount oil cooler == SA

points dizzy == 79 SA

So its a 79 SA almost certainly.

Just let your header serve as a blockoff plate for 'em... they're there to support the air injection system, which fed thru the bottom of the thermal reactor. Header flange blocks them nicely.

Use the regular exhaust manifold gasket. Works dandy dry, no goop needed.

yuppers, with the header flange your good, with the s2 and s3 exhaust manis you end up with an exhaust leak.

The SA engine has heavy rotors and a small oil pump compared to your '85.
