What is causing this noise?

Hoping for a ‘it’s this, and you do this’ answer. But kinda know it’s a long shot.

In the Toutube video linked, it’s the deeper rattling noise. Sounds like someone hung a screwdriver on a piece of string against the passenger side firewall, or dropped a thumb side rock in the ashtray. All the other squeaky noises are just a 40 year old car.

Triggered by bumps in the road. Not effected by braking, accelerating or steering. Not effected by moving the heater control sliders around.

Does not seem to transmit through pedals or steering wheel.

Have removed blower and plastic box above it, glovebox and passenger door card. (Oddly enough when I removed blower and box the noise seemed to get worse). Have searched under dash, inside door and on engine side of firewall and don’t see/feel anything loose that would make that kinda noise. Have checked the torque on all suspension and steering fasteners on front passenger side. All measured good.

Hoping to not have to keep removing parts until the noise stops. Not enjoying the car right now as all I can think of when driving is what’s causing the noise.

Thanks!

Maybe something in the air intake space at the base of the windshield?

Funny enough, I did pull that vent panel off and believe it or not, this is what I found underneath!

Seems to be a roll of adhesive paper tape. By the look of it, it’s been there since the car was built.

Sadly, was not the cause of the noise. Just swapped struts, springs and all the other upper pieces left to right. Test drive this afternoon to see if the noise changes sides.

It looks like one of those giant rolls of toilet paper in a workplace bathroom. That's hilarious you and whoever before you had been riding around with that stowed in the body. I'll have to look in mine .

Good luck in your search for the noise, I wish I had a suggestion for you.

A suspension bolt that's not fully tightened? It also sounds like worn out bushings (sway bars, tie rods, etc).

All bushings replaced a couple of years ago. All suspension fastener torques checked, except for nut on top of damper / strut insert rod. Tool for that arriving tomorrow.

one of these and some rubber hoses to different sections of the car. and stuck to your ear to see where it's coming from while driving- (dr suess images in my head)

does sound like something is just hanging around in a tube though. check your lower A/C tube under the steering wheel. just tap it ,,,,,hell, I would be tapping everywhere

could be anything literally, but many have stated the obvious

Interesting idea. Am traveling right now, but will start rattle chasing when I am back next month.

Found the noise and killed it!

Replaced a torn transmission mount thinking that may be the source of the noise, but no good. Still rattling on test drive. Slid the jack back under the nose of the car to raise the front end again, and caught the jack on the lower edge of the fascia under the fender. As the facia released it twanged back into place with the exact same rattle I was trying to kill. Couple of zip ties to replace broken brackets and noise has now gone. Yeah!

Here is the noise I was chasing.

and here is the cause.
