yeah I dont have any idea why you'd go out of your way to attach a slushbox to a rotary, but too each his own I guess.

The C6 is pretty damned bulletproof, but you can break anything.

The C4 on the other hand is aptly named... after an explosive compound! They *can* be built to be fairly beefy, and they weigh a lot less than the C6. But there's a reason Ford never offered the C4 behind big-blocks, and they never offered the AOD (an overdrive C4) behind the straight six in the trucks.

The 3-speed JATCO trans used behind rotaries seems to be fairly beefy, however you can't really get performance parts for it. I've heard of some very quick rotaries (big turbos) using bone stock JATCO's with no problems.

Autos are advantageous for drag racing. Better launch, faster shifts, and with a good converter you can have a fairly narrow powerband and rely on the converter to keep it from falling off the torque curve after a shift. Torque converters are basically fluidic CVT's.

It gets expensive going through $800-900 converters trying to find the one that best works for your combination, though.

I am looking at building a drag car for next year. I know a bunch of people run auto's at the strip, but I was never sure why.

I do understand the problem about torque convertors going out tho. Thats the main reason why the auto RX-8 has a 4 port engine, with a 7500 RPM redline. They were blowing out torque convertors at the 9,000 RPM redline of the 6 port version.

Also on automatic turbo cars, you can launch on boost and never take your foot off the throttle, so boost is maintained throughout the run.

Most early fords (60's) and (70's) V8 and in-line 6's used a cruise-a-matic auto transmissions. the hi-po 271 289's and shelbys anything performance wise got the C-4's
they look the exact same on the outside it's mostly valvebody differences. C-6's are bullet proof as well as the 'N' case 9' inch 3rd members, and carriers 28 or 31 spline axles.

For drag racing on most V8 engines the best transmission is a powerglide..IMHO..

thcruise o matic are ( from what ive seen atleast) more like early 60's... all the late 60's and up fords ive dealt with are usually a c-4 if its a small block L6 or small block v8..... i might be wrong.. im just juding by the galaxies/ fairlanes/comets/mavericks etc ive been around...

please correct me if im wrong.. its always good to learn somehting new

hey peejay maybe you can help. since you mentioned clevelands.... we have one thats in a 70 torino...and the tranny ate **** and died.... well weve been told that the tranny is a c-4 by several tranny shops... but we have yet to find a c4 that will fit...... we have the one we pulled..and the main problem seems to be that the TQ converter in this tranny is a dif size than all the others that weve come across....

so would this tranny be an fmx ( ive never even heard of an fmx.. enlighten me )

thanks
