Question Weber Question!!

I have my eyes on a set of webers that if I choose to grab one has to be within the next 2 days cause the prices are nice!
One is a 44IDF downdraft. Now, I have read on this board once or twice that the IDF are pretty hard to come by and that they are very good. This particular specimen is coming off a VW Bug.The other is a 38 Dcoe Sidedraft that is brand new in the box.

P.S. Im selling my Holley 650 I dont want it anymore.

My questions are:
1.Which of th 2 is the better choice or should I just wait around for a 40 DCOE to show up where Im buying the other two.?
2.What benefits / disadvantages does one have over the other?

BTW is your engine a 12A or 13B???? Ported?

Well, buying the wrong carb is wasting money. IMO..

I would go with the 44IDF of the two. but you will need a manifold & linkage.. So there is more money you have to spend..

What are you looking at spending? there is a 48IDA /w manifold on the partstrader right now for $400.. it is for a 13B but you could sell the manifold & buy another..

Go for the 44 IDF for power, the 38 DCOE for more streetability. If its street ported, the 38 is a little small. A 45 DCOE would be much better. BTW, you have a BIG gap between your #1 rotor housing and intermediate housing!!!!

OK... the 38DCOE is right out 'cos it's just way too small for even a stock port engine... The 44IDF is also probably too small, plus I'm told they're not really performance carbs...

Like everyone else said... get a 48IDA, or a 48DCOE... or just keep the setup you've got now...

The IDA is a down draft and the DCOE is a sidedraft carb.. there are other diffs too but i am not all that familliar with them..

The IDF is alot like the IDA, but there are diffs..

I'm still learning them myself

The DCOE is a sidedraft carb (the letters DCO basically mean dual-choke(barrel) horizontal in Italian), the IDF and IDA are two-barrel downdrafts. (or downdraughts, depending on which side of the road you drive on)

The IDF and DCOE have choke (as in cold-start) mechanisms, while the IDA is more of a racing carb and does not have one. IDF will not bolt to an IDA-pattern manifold, apparently the IDA has a wider spread between the bores. Also the IDF has a special type of idle metering circuit.

Gene Berg (of the VW world) is tooling up to make his own version of the IDA carb. No clue on how much they cost, but as they're for VWs, you'll see big sizes like 55IDAs

would there be any advantages to getting my niki modified rather than buying a new carb? four barrel vs. two barrel?
