Weber 48 IDA

Afternoon. I'm looking into a new carb for my 83 gsl, and I'm leaning towards the Weber 48 IDA from racing beat. They say they don't recommend using it on a Stockport 12A, but what will happen if I do, because I'm not looking to port my engine just yet (only because of budget concerns, if I were to do that Id like to just rebuild the engine while I'm in there anyway)
So if anyone has any experience with these please let me know.

a 48 IDA is way too big on a stock 12A. The engine wont run right. Bigger is not always better. On a stock port, in my opinion the best is a sterling nikki or a modified/hogged out nikki. The nikki is a great carb when properly tuned.

Simply not true. The Weber 48 is extremely versatile due to its tunability. I’m running one on my stockport 12a without any issues. Take the time to tune one by referring to the countless online resources and you’ll have a carb that will work on your 12a and most any future setup.

Keep in mind that the IDA (and DCOE side draft) has interchangeable venturis. A 48 IDA has 48MM throttle butterflies but may have much smaller venturis fitted. So, by changing the venturi size the effective air flow of the carb can be changed to fit performance parameters of the engine. IDA's are used on stock/lightly ported 12A engines in SCCA GT-L with small venturis as well as fully street ported and bridge ported 12As and 13Bs in E Production, GT3 and GT2 with anywhere from 42-44MM venturis.

My guess is that an IDA won't be as good as a Niki is in stop and go traffic. Since IDAs don't have chokes cold weather start up could be a bitch.
