the weakest link

Ok, I know that when you are planning on alot mmore power you have to beef up the drive train. stronger tranny, drive shaft and axels.
my question is on the '85 GSL rear end what si the weakest link?
if I go to the Re-Speed Moser Axles I get stronger shafts. Will they handle 350rwhp? I'm thinking the ring gear is the week point, so no?
I want to do the T2 BB kit, but also plan on more power.

thanks

Brakes first then power. No point in going really fast if you can't stop. Those Moser axles should be more than strong enough for 350HP. Email billy at Re-Speed, he can tell you for sure. The rear end of the GSL is actually pretty stout, but look into a Grannys Speed Shop Ford 8.8 rearend conversion.

the wakest link in the rear end is the axles, the ring and pinion, then the housing itself.. we blew the main caps out of 5 3rd members before upgrading the rear end to an 8.8

get an 8.8 out of a cobra and its got disk brakes already

I’m doing the upgrade to the 8.8 right now, big diff-erence, the 8.8 axels are huge in comparison to the rx's and with out a doubt stronger.

My 8.8 came out of a 2000 explorer with disk brakes for $200. I bought granny’s brackets for the conversion for $195 and I’m just now putting them on.

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning on upgrading the brakes first. thats why I want to know if the Mosers will be fine when I up reade the rest I don't want to repeat mods. The 8.8 is cool but I'll stick with Moser if I can get away with it.
Some good info here

jaidedeye: Axles are around 300, but they dont need mounts welded or shortened
also I don't forsee going over about 350hp. I'm thinking they will work

It's all about how much you abuse it and if you will be drag racing. I've been running a 13BT with about 300rwhp on the standard drivetrain for over 2 years now. Gearbox has a bit of a whine but otherwise works perfectly. The standard Series 3 LSD with the left casing machined for more crush hasn't missed a beat. If and when something breaks then I will upgrade.

680RWHP12A: how much HP were you putting through your axles when you started blowing the main caps?
