removing carpet
how do i pull the very front piece of carpet up on a 85 gs?? it looks like its a solid piece up under the dash...can i pull it out without removing the dash? or would i have to cut it?
You can, there is a u-shaped bracket under the stereo that needs to be removed, along with the shifter. The bolts, (3) that hold the bracket to the tranny tunnel are a pita to get to.

Holy thread revival! Ok, so I am beating my brains out trying to get the front of the carpet out from under the dash.... Right now I can barely get the carpet out from under, what I'm assuming is, the heater core (directly behind where the stereo would be). The actual front part of the dash is giving me very little, if any play, but I have taken quite a few screws/bolts out. I took some pictures (sorry about the quality, it was with my phone) of where I am at currently with the hope that maybe there are some screws I missed? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
sinister,
you need to remove the plastic center counsul that is around your stick shift, then remove the u shaped metal bracket (2 bolts on the side of the center consol and 2 on the bottom), bolts are on the transmission bump (as trochoid said).
The carpet will slide out from under the heater core. No need to mess withthe heater core
Next you will notice a little rust on the floor boards where water seeped under the tar sound proofing. Time to get out the bondo!

speedracer, by "plastic center consul" did you mean remove the plate around the shifter (as seen in the pic)?? also, is the U-shaped bracket visible in this pic or will it only be visible when I remove the plate? or is it maybe located directly underneath where the stereo sat? thanks a lot for your help guys, i have the next 2 nights off from work so i'm trying to get this done quickly.
...I'm replacing the whole red interior with a black one. I know, I was already tired from work, midnight, and due back to work at 4am; I got so irritated with the red Carpet I was trying to remove, I just cut i all off (I stripped the whole interior out, seats and everything. I removed the black interior from a 1983 FB at the local junk yard, which I was extremely careful not to damage. It really just takes patience and figuring stuff out. Trial and error, as long as you don't brake anything...I understand hesitation because it's your baby...one that's taking you to work the next morning (I'm driving mine stripped with the black interior in the hatch!) but it's mostly common sense, All you need is a screw driver, 10's, and 12,s. Now the dash, that's the hard part.
sinister,
no not that plate, those 5 bolts hold the lower shift boot to the transmission (coincidentally, I'm replacing now). Arrow pointing up shows where the bolts are that you need to remove the plastic consul, there are also philips sheet metal screws at the glove compartment and by the steering column that you need to remove.
But first remove your ashtry, to get at 2 philips screws holding the plastic facade that covers the radio and heater vent controls.
this is harder to explain than to do !

thanks for your help guys, but i got to be honest, i just cut that SOB. i removed so many bolts, and i probably just needed to pull even harder, but i knew it just would be hell to try and then slide it back in. the front part of the dash was just giving me no play. so, i cut one side as close to the dash as i could, and then slid the other side out by pulling from the side (it came out mercifully easy). i really appreciate your help though guys, i'll post some pics after i've dyed it just and fitted it back in.
