useless mod

My friend has this idea for a mod on his 85 12A. To move the alternator from original location to basically where the air pump was. Seems to be about the right size, and other than finding a belt that would fit correctly, and lengthening a few wires. Seems to be relatively easy. Also may not need the yoohoo belt anymore. Ideas??? I personally think it would "clean up" the engine bay some.

yeah I was thinking abou tthat also, and I am thinking that some sort of heatshield that would go under the intake and corner down behind the new location would be a good way to reduce the excess heat on the alternator. Would help the intake manifold also.

I want to move mine to the AC location. That way it will not be in the way of the Air Filter.

Hey that may work too. He is just thinking that as long as it moves, it will be better than right there "in the way".

In the way of a big blower? Or is the engine getting installed is something that has a very low hoodline?

Meh, it's probably one of those strut tower braces that wasn't made to fit properly.

No, actually he thinks it being where it is is kind of in the way for some reason. "It just sticks up, and looks dumb there" he says. Would be a nice mod to do if you were to put a blower on though....

Maybe your friend is a little to into 4 cylinders for his own good? I really like the stock alternator location on a rotary.

Yup, already in the middle of swapping mine to the A/C position. The A/C bracket is a heavy monster though, so you may want to have a bracket like it fabricated out of something lighter and it also doesn't quite square up and has to have it's mounting holes slotted otherwise you'll through belts left and right at high rpms.

I'm also going to relocate my oil filter and shave the oil fill tube down as far as possible. I'm putting on true (actually go out on the exhaust side) dual side draft carbs. The only two things sticking up after that will be the dizzy and thermostat housing. It'll be a flat top 12a

Here is a test fit of the carbs and alt.:

Good luck! Oh yeah, I'm also putting in an S5 (FC) radiator and electric fan because I love that forward leaning look and it really opens the engine bay up too.

Thanks

I would, but all of those parts are currently in MO and I've moved to MI recently for a job up here. In about a month, or hopefully no later than Thanksgiving, I'll be going back down to MO to rent a Uhaul and bring all my stuff up here. If you can wait that long I can get better pictures. Otherwise, just PM me with any questions. Once it is finished, I'll have photos and a how-to for those interested.
