Master and slave clutch cylinder rebuild
Rebuilt master and slave cylinder today. Got rebuild kits from advance auto. both had to be special ordered. both kits had cheap garbage parts in them. Slave cylinder turned out to be too pitted to be rebuilt so i purchased a new one. I did get to rebuild the master cylinder. Installed new stainless steel slave cylinder hose from mazdatrix. I am very happy with the ss hose. NOT very happy with anything I got from Advance Auto. Single person brake bleeding kit also sucked (also from advance auto.) Oh well.

I am about to replace both cylinders too. Slave is completely shot. Two quick questions: What can i expect to pay for two rebuild kits versus two replacement parts? I am asking because I am having a garage do the work and i have to factor in labor cost. (damn this economy!) I planned to do it myself but find i dont have the time or tools to complete the project. Thanks.

rebuild kits for each are about $12.00. you need a 10mm brakeline wrench or (visegrips) you need a 12 and 14mm open end wrench, 12mm socket with at least 10" extension to get slave cylinder off. 4# steel wool (home depot) a lot of paper towels. A gear wrench also really helps getting that top nut off of the master cylinder. If you are like me you also go ahead and take the hard hydraulic lines off the car and clean them up as well as the portion of the firewall that is now exposed. don't forget to dip the new parts in brake fluid before assembly, if you don't it makes priming the cylinders a bitch. all tools to do this job could be had for about $50.00. With you doing it you would also know what shape your cylinders are in and whether or not to replace them. A good in depth project fpr beginers.
