uh oh: flood?

I just got my car 85 gsl-se that has a 12a carb engine swap on it today. I drove it about 100 kms. Parked it for a few hours, started it later and it shut off 5 seconds later. Then i remember i have no choke and started it again while pumping the gas, this time it started and died even faster. Now it just cranks but does not start? Did it flood because i gave it gas before it actually started?

Any help would be appreciated.

Possibly. Can you smell a strong scent of gas fumes? Best thing to do would be to pull the top 2 spark plugs on the motor (trailing plugs). Disable the ignition by unplugging the negative leads on both coils, etc. Put a newspaper or rag or something in front of the 2 plug holes to catch the vapor gas mist. Crank the motor for a few seconds repeatedly. If your plugs are fouled with gas then clean them off and burn the excess gas off with a lighter. Reinstall them and hook up everything and see if she tries to fire up. If this doesn't work then you might have to disable the fuel pump while repeating the process.

Or instead of getting under the hood and messing with that sh*t, you can find out wich fuse is for the fuel pump, pull it and crank the engine for 10secs, then put the fuse back in and start it up.

On the -SE's you can also pull one of the small clips off one of the coils, and it turns the fuel pump off, crank the engine for 10secs, put the clip back on, and start it up.

Either was is much easier than pulling plugs or whatever, and it has ALWAYS worked for me.

Yup! That would be the blue connector plug on the front-most coil. I put a switch on mine so's I didn't have to get out, pop the hood, etc..

I just wired an on/off switch in-line with the fuel pump fuse. I also hid the switch, so it's a little bit of security too

um, i did the atf trick but still no luck. These are the symptoms. Car is cranking but not starting. I followed the easy 2-step on this pg. http://www.rx7.com/tech/unflood-sa-carb.html

could it be anything else other than it being flooded?

If it is flooded, i should move on to do the "Complex Unflooding Procedure(1979-85 carbureted)" from that site....rite?

thx

carlito, your problem sounds very close to mine. i have narrowed my problem down to a fuel pump issue. i'll let you know if i fix my problem when the working one gets here. test your pump!

Because it causes your engine to lose compression which makes for hard starting. The oil metering pump injects small amounts of oil to keep the seals lubed and also causes a "water tension effect" that prevents compression from leaking out past the seals. The easiest way I can explain it is like the bicycle pump syndrome. If you ever had one that quit pumping air, it's because the seal in side dried up and lets air past it. Put a little oil in it and give it a few pumps and pressure is restored. The seal in the pump will expand because of the oil but it's basiclly the same principal. (which they don't do in the car).
