Turbo Question?

This is the situation, I have a chance to buy a stock turbo set up for cheap, off of a 88 ford probe GT, my question is, is it possible to mod it to fit on my 84 12a? or should i just forget about the idea completly, thanks!

That turbo is too small and a waste of time.

Everything that I read points to getting ATLEAST a stock Buick Grand National/T-Type turbo or bigger...that's a 3.8L turbo incase you dont know what they are. These have 57mm(T04) compresser and 76mm(T3) turbine w/ A/R .63, but it has a 3 bolt pattern on the header to turbo flange....otherwise, I would be installing the TA-51 I pulled off my GN on the '7 right now!

Even that would be marginal.
The stock HT18 Hitachi turbo on the TII is roughly the opposite of the GN turbo. Its equal to a T4 on the hotside and a T3 on the coldside.I assume this is to promote good airflow on the way out,but provide quicker spooling, having a smaller compressor section. When you have a hybrid TII turbo made, the majority of the work is to the compressor section,to increase the volume of air the turbo can move, for a given shaft speed. The stock hotside(especially the S5...1.00 A/R) can flow pretty good, and usually just requires a turbine clip.
Forget the Ford turbo, like 99% of other factory automotive turbos, its WAY to small for a rotary.
