Turbo?
ok so this stupid kid in my class has an '84 Rx-7...in good condition...
but he says that it has a stock turbo...now i had an '82 and i never heard of any first gens that had stock turbos....the only motor thay put in the first gens is the 12a right?
i didnt get to see it up close and he said he wont open the hood for me so gonna find a way for him to open the hood for me
was i rite tellin him that its impossible to have a stock turbo on a first gen?

they were only made in japan though, but some ppl have them

Terrified.
I think Australians got the 12at as well, didn't they? Anyway, yeah that kid is full of crap. There is a possibility if it is an '84 to have a 13b like someone else said, but even that is unlikely as someone who is going to lie about having a stock turbo probably doesn't know there is a possibility of it having a 13b in it either.

The 12AT was 165hp (JIS) and was EFI, but with no intercooler. The 1983 turbo car was called the GT-X, and it also had the suspension and brake mods that were carried over into the 13B powered GSL-SE, that we got in the states.
Its possible he has a factory 12AT installed, they are around and not too hard to swap in.Plus, anyone could have owned the car before him....its possible, but not very likely.
If it is a 12AT,youll know right away from the red "turbo" intake pipe and red cooling fan.

As the others have said, he's full of it. Its possible that someone at sometime swapped in a 12AT, or even a 13BT, etc. Maybe he has one of those swank turbonator things?
However, usually when some people don't let you look under the hood, there is a reason. Kind of like the kid I went to highschool that had a "z28" camaro, the only one ever built with a V6, special made just for him from GM, or this *** hat old man who had the only V6 Trans Am ever built....

Australia also did not get the 12AT engined RX-7. Quite a few of the engines were imported for RX-3s which legally could not have a 13BT transplant.
The 12AT came out in two versions, the 7 got the later model with the Hitachi HT 18S-BM turbo which produced165 hp[JIS]. 144.7 hp SAE. This was 27% up on the 12A NA version whicn in Jspec gave 130JIS being 114SAE; way up on the detuned version sold in the USA. With the addition of an intercooler and better ecu and exhaust, they can produce 230 hp SAE giving nearly 200rwhp in a smooth reliable engine. The trim is orange not red, the cooling fan having an extra blade, including the Rotary Turbo badges on the front and rear of the car.
It was not called the GT-X. The only model which only came with the 12AT was the 85 model LV of which 200 were built, all were silver with a black rear spoiler. However, you could get a 12AT as an option in the normally 12A engined GT, GT-X and SE-Ltd models for an extra 225,000 yen. The only two road tests I have seen are on the optioned model, a GT tested to 235kph[145mph] and the heavier GT-X at 225kph[140mph]. Both good performances for a stock 1984 model, but marginally slower than the Cosmo with the same engine.
if you are getting a 12AT engine make certain its not from an early model Cosmo unless you intend to rebuild and go for the larger S-5 turbo which is a TO4 compared with the TO3 equivalent of the stock 12AT.
Very doubtful it is a stock 12AT but could be a 12A with an aftermarket turbo like from Rotaryshack.
Ask a simple trick question, what type of carb does it have?

Hey guys there is another way to look at what the dude said...
If he says its a stock turbo, he might just mean its the stock turbo for whatever RX-7 engine it came on.
Like if it has a swapped s4/s5/s6 turbo engine, it would still be a stock turbo unless he had an aftermarket turbo on it. There's a lot of convertibles with "stock turbos" that didnt come that way from the factory.
