Turbo 12a

If I was going to buy a turbo from a 1988 300z...Is there anyways possible for me to custom bend some pipes for the exhaust and intake to make it fit my 12A??

And say I did get the pipes bent and bolted up...Would my holley carb even know what to do with all the extra air?

Am I just waisting my time and money in a project that will not become successful??

Am I better off buying a T2?

And if I buy a T2 or TURBO it myself, would I have to run an ECU?

I plan on getting a second job soon(part time) to start saving so I can begin this project this summer... How much money do you guys think I'm looking at here??

Do you mean the whole engine or just the turbo? If your going to grab a turbo off another car you should be grabbing an FC turbo. Most OEM's use turbos that are a decent size for a piston engine but too small for a rotary. You can use your Holley but you must get it boost prepped. Do a search for that, blow-through (thru) turbo setups. If you use your carb you will not need an ecu, but there are other parts you will need to upgrade.

Use a turbo off a TII. Cheap, easy to get, and work well with the rotary (12A or 13B).

Do you think that is a better route than just buying a T2??

No, chances are that turbo will be too small. You can talk to some of the turbo gurus who know a bit more but i think robert at rotary shack said alot of decent size for piston)turbos are too small.

Definetly better to get sometihng you KNOW will work. Either one of the turbos approved by all the rotary guys/shops or a TII

The best turbo for a rotary is a turbo from a rotary.

This is in the 12a sense, because we don't have a turbo anyways (well, except for the 12at guys). Just grab a 12a header flange, 13b header flange, 2 2" (iirc) long steel cylinders for the exhaust. Weld it all up and stick it on the engine. That should clear the manifold, and just bolt the turbo to that. Run your coolant/oil lines. Boost prep the carb. Add intercooler, boost regulator, wastegate, and BOV. Route IC piping. Jet carb. Modify fuel tank. Get better fuel pump. Rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Bigger fuel lines. Wideband/boost gauges.

Just to name a few things.

Haha. I try to make it look easy, so when people get frustrated and give up I can get new parts for cheap

Just kidding!

Thanks alot guys for all the opinions!! I really liked the link to the site with the turbo engine for sale.

What mods would I have to under go to run that motor in my car??

New engine mounts??
New fuel system(including tank)?
Cut a hole in my floor-board??
Have to wire up an ECU??

I know the questions keep comming, but hey! You keep answering right?? I really want to get this project underway this summer...

Thanks agian guys!

Amen.

And not just from a flow perspective.
Just think of all the mounting and clearance issues your gonna sidestep by getting a stock TII turbo. With the rotaries weird 2 hole exhaust manifold configuration and the close proximity of the 1st gen's idler arm,it just makes sense. And theres nothing special about the Hitachi HT18,its no more expensive or rare than any other factory turbo. The S5 turbo and mani are actually a pretty decent pair, just throw on a TO4 compressor and youve got a potent setup.Mine feeds a streetported 13BT up to 14psi all day, and has over 50K reliable miles on it.
Even the crappy S4's turbo/manifold is a simpler and better choice than trying to force another engines turbo into place and having to make a manifold.

Ive been trying to gather a parts list and a list of shops and such around here to get my 12a prepped for a turbo. More important things come first, like my brakes. Its also nice to see other Rx-7 owners in NC on these forums, I am in Salisbury myself.

By the way 2fast, you wouldn't happen to want to trade/sell the wheels on your first gen or know anyone that has a set that will around here would you?

If you allready have a 12A engine I would just say go w/ what u have. B/c all the mods these guys are saying cost quite a bit , even buying here. I assume you're balling on a bidget and thats why u dont have a 20B in your 1 gen. Thats in my opinion is the best way. And in saying that, I just bought a 3rd. gen and will have no more use for MY 12A tirbo kit and was planning on selling here once I take some pix. If you're interested get at me Its a blo thru turbonetics(hat/BOV) set up w/ an Airesearch T3 turbo,R.B. manifold,Converted for 12A turbo built by ME. Perfect for a stock or s.p. motor. all the parts are new and am asking 800. Either way I didnt mean to **** on your thread and apologize just trying to save u some hassle and some money. Both of which Ive already done in this equation. G/L!!-Erik
