Turbo on 12A
I just bought a 1983 Mazda RX 7 GSL, with, as you know, the 12 A motor. I'm wondering if it's possible to put a turbo on this motor? I know there was a GT Turbo edition in Japan starting in 1983. Would it be cheaper (or even possible) to just buy this engine? I've heard it puts out 183 Engine HP. But, I do sort of like NA's feel. I dunno. I little advice for a new comer? Also, I like to buy things a little bit at a time, since that's what my budget is like. Would $2300 or so get me far into the world of the RX 7 First Gen? I'm sorry for asking what are probably rather stupid questions, but I always thought more of the first gens than the 101 HP/100 Ftlbs they're rated at.
BTW, is the numbers of about 9.7 0-60 and 16.8 1/4 true? Those seem low until you look at the power ratings. I mean, I know it's light, but, damn! That IS awesome for such low power!

I was just joking, but the mods didn't like my joke since my post was deleted...
Do a search for the word turbo on the 1st gen section and you will find 455,332,232,987 bytes of information on anything you want to do about it.
BTW welcome to the forum.

First off, welcome to the forum! Despite some annoying responses at times this really is the best place for 1st gen info.
12a turbo? can it be done? In a word, ABSOLUTELY! My suggestion to you is to pull up a comfy chair to your 'puter, crack a beer or two and start reading the 1st gen archive section as well as the 1st gen FAQ. Between these two areas you should start to get a pretty good idea what can and can't be done to these fantastic engines. Good luck and again, welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome. I really thought you were serious about the turbo. lol. Shows how much I know about these cars. Also, before I go in the long search, will a turbo throw off the weight distribution too much? I bought this car to drift around in as well as cruise (yes, I have two suspension setups, thanks to the original owner
)
Thanks again for the welcome.

On the weight distribution, no it won't affect it much. Just make sure you put a heavy subwoofer in the back to counter and keep the 50/50

I'd rather go with as much as I can do and still keep the car N/A... that's what I'm doing with mine anyway... I dunno... with me, it's just knowing that it's all engine and not Turbos or Superchargers or NOS.... knowing my car can (or will eventually) beat any vehicle I want it to be (within reason of course) when it's a tiny 1.1 litre engine and all N/A is a "breath of fresh air" to me (pun intended.)
jweather73, i felt the same way and did everything possible except porting. the car was pretty quick but after riding in a couple turbo rotaries and seeing dyno results of over 300hp with STREETABILITY i was hooked. granted an n/a rotary can do the same with a hell of alot of work and it's a nice thing to be able to say "yep, no power adders... all rotor" then you go around the city and the guy with the turbo is just cruising and your punching it just to get to the speed limit because you have no low end power. just something to think about. BUT, if yours is just a race car , then nevermind. hahahaha, i'm so fat.
Porting is fine with me... and my friend (BDC) who does porting jobs on 2nd gens, he's pushing I think 400hp+ at the rear wheels in his T-][, so yeah... I know what you mean about getting hooked on the power!!
But I also have to remain sensible... if I had the type of power he has on his car, I'd kill myself in it. Same reason I love but wouldn't ever buy a crotch-rocket.
And this car, by the way... my car... it's a daily driving car that I want to have power there when I want/need it. I'm just kinda stuck on fundage right now.
