after spending the winter in my driveway, I finally had the space, time, and energy to get my SA22 going, sorta. I got it into the garage after filling the passanger side tires, and then unsiezing the brakes on that corner (would not rotate at ALL, I was using the starter to move the car and the starter was spinning the rear tires before the car would move!)

ANYWAYS, I got it into the garage and up onto ramps, pulled the header off (boy was THAT a ******* pain in the ***), had a look at the apex seals... 3 on the front rotor are perfect, not stuck, no damage, etc.

3 on the back rotor.. first one, not stuck, no damage.. second and 3rd are both undamaged but STUCK HARDCORE! how do I unstick them? I jabbed at them with my thumb but got nowhere. They've been soaking in ATF and MMO all winter so obviously those won't work.

btw: the engine is a streetported 13B, I have the intake manifold off of it too...

 

Since you say they've been soaking all winter, I would just start it up and hope that centrifical force will throw them out. Maybe a few blips of the throttle will aid in unsticking the seals.

 

I can't get the damn thing to run I need to tune the carb and want a good base to start on so that I can get it to run!

Run a search for "powerfoam" (hope I remember this right).... It's supposed to be the ultimate for this kind of stuff. Might be available in a marine supply shop, can't remember...

 

Hmm I've noticed some of my seals sticking when I first start up in the morning. I need to drive around at about 3000rpm for a while before I can accelerate above there otherwise it makes a very weird exhaust sound.. maybe you could somehow heat them up, perhaps a heat gun. might help them move..

Well short of pulling the engine apart, you have 2 options as above.

- Powerfoam
- Heating

You can try pushing on the seals with something not too hard too perhaps... or maybe they have lost their spring? The springs have no force left in them and the seals are already pushed in...

 

Amsoil Powerfoam, can be purchased at their site on the net.

 

think I would damage the apex seals with a propane torch? Probably not eh, I'm sure compression/combustion in the engine is far more abusive.

You can get seafoam at Advance Auto Parts if you have one near you.

 

A couple of weeks ago I dumped a full can of Seafoam into my gas tank when it was only about 1/8 full (of gas). I wanted it to be a really strong concentration to get my motor good and clean.

About five miles down the road I felt this huge boost in power.

Not sure if I had a seal stuck or what, but it was sure as hell worth the five bucks I spent!
