Is this the mechanical advance? if so how is there a good way to lock it in so that nothing advances?

Yes, that is the mechanical or centrifugal advance. This is why it's best to set your timing at 4000+rpm so that you get the correct total ignition timing.

But you can also lock the dizzy. The easiest way would be to remove the springs from the advance mechanism. That way the weights swing out to full advance as soon as you start the engine. Another and more fool-proof way is to tack weld or jam the weights into the full advance postition.

To gain acces to the springs and weights you need to remove the lobed gear from the dizzy shaft with a puller as well as the plate that holds the magnetic pickups.

I've done this mod to a spare dizzy I had and it's really easy to do. Good luck.

I fixed my site a little and upped some new ignition pics. I also decided to start calling my poorman's direct fire ignition system SLIDFIS because it uses a single leading ignitor and is still a direct fire ignition system (it's only one new letter to remember compared with DLIDFIS). All the old posts refering to poorman.html and pmdfis are now linked to slidfis.html at my site.

I'm doing lots of cool things this summer, but the pics always seem to be the last things to show up on the web page, so check back now and then.

otherwise the two rotors would line up perfectly and you would have a very wobbly engine on your hands,

The rotors r 90 degrees from each other on 2 rotor engines
120 degrees from each other on 3 rotor engines.

Nope, they're actually 180* apart on a two rotor.

so how are you triggering the leading ignitors? like I'm a little shakey on where you're getting the pickup signal for them to fire at the correct times. The trailing plugs are obviously timed by the distributor, but, what's timing the leading plugs?

*goes out and looks at ignition system*

ahh, makes more sense now, didn't actually realise the ignitors were right on the distributor to start with

I get it now

so could you fire the ignitors off of an ignitor? or do you have to just make some sort of mount where the stock ignitors was and run leads to the two replacement ignitors?

I compiled this list of threads while I was doing my research for DLIDFIS, hopefully it may take some of the work out of searching for those that follow ...

I'm still looking for tidbits, so I'm sure I'll add to this list.

J109 ignitors vs. GM HEI ignitors

Moses X605's DLIDFIS writeup

Hyperformance2K’s MSD+DLIDFIS thread

Kettlman’s DLIDFIS myth? Thread

Metallic Rock’s FC3S coil install

Gen I coil spark vs. Gen II coil spark
