Transmission mount issues or worse?
On my 83 GS, I get a fair amount of movement in the gear shift **** between accelleration and decelleration (while leaving it in gear). Is this a sign of worn or broken transmission mounts? or am i looking at something worse?
Thanks!

No. It's motor mount play (why would a transmission mount have anything to do with side to side motion?). Some is normal, and a good torque brace tightens things up nicely.

The motor mounts through two donut-type mounts at the front engine brace. This is attached to the engine front cover, and these two rubber isolating mounts form the front 2 legs of the mount system. The front mounts are not identical, and look like this;
The front mount brace looks like this;
At the rear of the transmission housing (the tailshaft), there is another mount that looks like this;
The rear transmission mount forms the 3rd 'leg' of the mounting system, and the engine/transmission is free to move against the rubber of the mounts whenever the engine revs in torque, or particularly when shifting as torque forces are first applied heavily, then released suddently (via clutch).
You'll know when your rear transmission mount or motor mounts need to be replaced if you have trouble missing shifts under heavy acceleration - this is due to the transmission moving excessively between gears, causing you to go from 2nd to 5th on upshift.
Replace all mounts at the same time (or when doing a clutch replacement at the rear) so that you have all parts covered that could cause problems. HTH,

The transmission mount has absolutely nothing to do with the engine rocking side to side. All it does is hold the tailhousing up off the ground.
Side to side motion is entirely up to the *engine* mounts. As you said, it's a triangle.
