I find this mazdatrix troubleshooting page to be quite useful when trying to find where noise or vibrations are coming from. http://mazdatrix.com/g2.htm

Thanks to everyone for their replies! I looked at the FAQs at mazdatrix and racingbeat too but did not dig deep enough so thanks for the link 4portgsl. The only thing I see is bad tranny mount and bad front u-joint. I'll have to jack up my car and look underneath it and probably then take it to a tranny shop.

P.S. I revived my own thread after more than a year so I have gotten my turn signal combo replaced and it did not cost nearly what I thought thanks to the help of our great forum members. Then I passed smog again and the latest in my mechanical part of my restoration was my engine rebuild. Now I'm still addressing other mechanical issues like the vibrations and also suspension components. Anyways I'll stop rambling now

I've been looking into this issue for a few months already since I noticed my vibrations getting progressively worse.

I have been troubleshooting different areas of the car and finally found the culprit.

"Found pressure plate bolt stripped and replaced with allen bolt that was way too long. Bolt caused excessive vibration from engine being out of balance." according to Paul, owner of Rotorsport.

At Rotorsport with my transmission off!

I ran into a problem when the remanufactured pressure plate that I bought in a clutch kit was bent and the holes were not lining up.

My previous pressure plate.

The reman. pressure plate. See the hammer marks?

After paying $70 for a used flywheel for my '82 from Mike at Mr. Mazda, $45 to resurface it, and an additional $170 for a brand new Exedy/Daikin OEM clutch kit from Paul 95% of my vibrations were gone!

I also replaced the pilot bearing and seal and rear main seal.

Paul and I agreed that the rest of the vibrations could be compression related so he used a genuine Mazda Compression Tester check my compression.

Just over 3,000 miles on my rebuilt engine with a rebuild kit consisting of all the essential pieces such as apex seals, side seals, all related springs, etc., and brand new 12A rotor housings here are my compression numbers:

#1 - 7.7 8.8 8.2 @289RPM
#2 - 8.5 8.9 6.4 @288RPM

Paul said newly rebuilt engines can easily achieve 9s and even 10s. He said that 6.4 number on the rear rotor is what is most likely causing the subtle excess vibrations as well as the ignition miss I am experiencing as well for being out of balance. He told me that my apex seals and housings should be fine since one low number indicates a side seal sitting issue.

I called Ben who rebuilt my engine and he agreed to reimburse me for the flywheel next time I take a drive up to his shop. Thanks Ben for making it right in the end.

I also decided to have my old, torn and leaking shift boots changed for new Mazda boots and now I have no more hot air leaking into my cabin.

A short clip I took to show how my engine sounds now and tried to capture the vibration movement but will try again to capture it better as well as the tach slightly jumping due to the little miss I still have.

Before you could hear my interior pieces especially from the center of the dash where the ashtray plate and radio plate is vibrate a ton (my indication that something wasn't right in the first place). Now it is nearly non existent since most of my vibration woes have been taken care of!
