tranny question

I have a 1985 rx7 gs (12A) it needs a transmission. The 2nd gear is grinding real bad. I was just wondering if a transmission out of a 1985 rx7 gsl-se (13B) would bolt up to it. any help would greatly appriciated.

You might need to take the weird vent nub thingie off of the side of the -SE transmission, if your car still has the beehive oil cooler.

Just swapped trannies again in my '85, got it down to 1:15 drive in/drive out, including washing up. Would have been faster but I forgot to unbolt the slave cylinder so I had to do it with the trans half-out (firewall gets in the way!) and the gear oil pump decided to crap out so it took forever to fill the trans. The bet was in and out in an hour, I now owe two pie.

Will shoot for 50 minutes next time, though! I know I have it in me...

Note: Car has header, no Heat Shield From Hell under the car, no wires going to the trans, and this is certainly not the first time I've had the trans out of an RX-7 before...

Gearing-wise, the -SE has a taller 5th gear than the 12A, so you might find 5th gear to be less useable in hilly areas, maybe. The difference ends up being a couple hundred RPM at highway speeds.

Internally, no, they're pretty much the same transmission that Mazda had been using since forever.

If you mean "tail housing", then yes, because it's the same exact part.

See other thread involving transmissions, '81-85 anything is directly compatible.
