Tranny problems

My friend has an 85 GSL-SE 5spd that wont go into 3rd gear at high rpms (while racing at the track). It doesnt grind or anything. The weird part is: While shifting from 2nd to 3rd, only in high rpms, it feels like it goes into 3rd but it doesnt do anything. It's going between 3rd and 5th gear, like if it was a "blank" gear, kind of like a neutral but inbetween 3rd and 5th. Does anyone have clue why this is happening?? Thanks.

He says it only happens going to third. It feels like it goes into a gear thats between 3rd and 5th. Gears dont grind or make any noise when this happens. Its like being in neutral.

Heres a quick paint drawing I made. It shows the position of the shifter when this happens.

you got me. even if the synchro was shot there would be grinding. does 3rd work ever? maybe he sheared it. other then that, tell him to pull it towards the left to see if it will mate.

3rd gear works fine when not redlined. Even if you shift fast without redlining 2nd it will go in fine. It only happens at high rpms. Hes tried moving it to the left before and nothing happens.

Is the 12A tranny any different from a 13B (GSL-SE) tranny? Theres plenty of 12A's around here and he was wondering if they will fit his car.

I think it will fit, but you may not want to do it. The 12A trannys are weaker (or so Ive been told). And just so youre not the only one with a problem like this...Lately, my car has decided that when I shift from 2nd to 3rd at high RPM's as stated earlier, my car REALLY REALLY does not like to go into 3rd. if I try and put it in gear, it just doesnt go, no grinding or anything, it just wont drop in. If I hold the cluth in and let the RPM's drop, it will fall in once they come down below 6.5 or so, but everynow and then, anything over that, it just wont go in.

In ma truck, when you downshift from 3rd to second, it won't go at all directly into 2nd, instead, I have to shift into first (without letting the clutch out), then back down to second... don't ask, it just works, and doesn't cause any visible problems...
