Total Advance

I had no luck on the search and I know it's been posted before. I am looking for a total advance timing and the RPM at which it shold be. I can't get my car below 1000 rpm even after warmup. No carb and intake and from RB with an open exhaust 12A (1980). I set my timing ABOUT 2 DEGREES advanced since I could not get it down to 750rpm. Will that do? Yes, the idle screw is all the way in.

LET ME KNOW if you find this out I have the same problem. Even at 1000 rpm it dies from time to time when I come to a stop.

Different things can cause this.

Some fixes:

1. Raise the floats 1mm so there will be a little more fuel in the float bowl. This will set the fuel in the float bowl glass to just a hair above center. When you come to a stop fuel sloshes around the float bowl and the fuel jets could go dry and stall the motor.

2. Clean and/or rebuild carb. Run some gumout fuel system cleaner in the fuel tank.

3. Need a tuneup.

4. Vacuum leaks.

24 degrees BTC on the leading is correct, but at 6000 rpm. I can't find a reference to 16 degrees trailing in any of my references. Racing Bleat says 5 degrees for the trailing with 24 degrees of leading, but I should add that this is for a bridge-ported motor with open exhaust.

That came from my 1985 Racing Bleat catalog.
6K is what it said, I suppose some of the info may have been revised since 1985, but I still think it's a valuable reference as it's focus is entirely on the early stuff.

So you are saying that the vacuum and mechanical advance in the distributor is maxed-out by 4000 rpm?

Yup, on a 1st gen 12A anyhow. Actually it maxes out at like 3600 IIRC. Have you ever verified it? It works that way on both my cars.

I'm not doubting you, I know for a fact that RB fudged a little in favor of surety in the early years. Running the motor up to 6000 rpm certainly makes damn sure that it's at full advance, eh?
