torque spec for...

the nut that holds on the flange on the differential (the flange that bolts to your driveshaft). I really don't want to buy a digital torque wrench so I can figure out what the torque spec is, and I was wondering if anyone knew what the torque spec was (1982 rear end, putting on a 1985 flange). Thank you.

are you referring to the large nut (pinion shaft nut) or the driveshaft bolts (4 12or 14mm)

Read that. The torque setting is in there, as well as the proper procedure for tightening.

Since the correct torque setting for the pinion nut also affects the lash of the ring and pinion and sets the crush tube, do it right and beg, borrow or steal a torque wrench.

Harbor Freight has 3/8" torque wrench on sale for $15. great deal, I'd get one but my old 1/2" TW works OK.

I'm going to order a good torque wrench from a reputable tool manufacturer, possibly either Matco or SnapOn.

I'd also advise replacing the crush tube, listed as "Distance piece" in most parts books. Once they have been set, they don't usually take a 2nd torque as well. This can cause all kinds of headaches.
