1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL - 110 MPH (Level Ground) 125 MPH (Slight downgrade + Tail wind)

1976 Volvo 245 DL Station Wagon - 85 MPH (Uphill, beginning to level out, mild traffic, small cargo, one passenger, broken overdrive on a 4 speed.)

1985 Honda Civic 4wd Wagon - 95 MPH (Level ground, engine beginning to overheat, shaking violently) 105 MPH (Same as 95MPH, except downhill + tail wind)

1996 Isuzu NPR Turbo diesel, 7 ton, 18 foot box truck - 85 MPH (Well over legal weight limit loaded with computer equipment, plastic pedal lifted up, foot on metal bar attached to the throttle cable in order to defeat speed limiter which was just a bolt under the plastic pedal )

1998 Ford Econoline E-250 - 100 MPH (No cargo, not mine, lots of pedal left to go, but I backed off.)

1995 Pontiac Grand Am - 115 MPH (Personal challange, one rotund passenger, I usually don't do stupid **** with passengers.)

Hmmm. That's all I can think of in terms of top speed. Slow enough to be considered lame, yet fast enough to be considered stupid. I should just quit trying.

Heh. My roommate has a '96 base (which means 5-speed and 2.4l DOHC four) and because it was factory-equipped with S-rated tires it had a limiter. His was an indicated 105mph.

Now, with 150-odd HP, you hit 105 pretty quickly. WAAAA*Nuh*WAAA*Nuh*WAAA*Nuh*WAAA*Nuh* all the way down the road.

My mom had a '93 SE (3.3l six, 160-170hp) that couldn't easily go over 85mph. That's where the powerband started to fall out in 3rd, and the Buick-derived sixes didn't get overdrive trannies in Grand Ams! Ton of punch below that, though.

I had my first car up to 100mph on a couple occasions with a badly knocking/blown engine - and I wasn't even in the secondaries yet! With a blown engine! I never went for top speed when it was still in good condition (all you need to know is: 429 4-barrel, baby) but I use to cruise between Cleveland and Oberlin College at a constant 90-95mph with no muss no fuss.

My second car (the one i just parted out) would top out at 87mph, and would run there all day every day. It loved wide open throttle, which was good because it was so slow you pretty much used the gas pedal like a light switch. (On or Off) The fun part was shifting into 4wd and driving 87mph in the snow!

Nah.. Auto tranny. (Ugh... I hate automatics. I can barely drive one. I always end up pressing on the "clutch" when I try to start them, and find out there is no pedal there. I always panic when pulling to red lights because I think I'm gonna stall the engine, there is no downshift slowing power...)

Ummm. Shifting into 4wd while moving that fast... Isn't that,,, like unreccomended,,, uhh,,, unsafe, and several other things? Cool, maybe I'll try it when I get the 7 fixed and can afford to waste the honda... That, and I wanna see what it feels like to be one of those guys on "World's Scariest Police Chases" going down the highway, riding on the brake rotors.

Not in a Subaru. There is no rear axle disconnect, so the shafts are spinning at the same speed. All shifting into 4wd does is slide a toothed ring like a dog-box transmission's sliders over the rear output shaft. Very cool. Also had synchros on the Hi-Low gearsets - could shift into Low range at any speed below 85mph! (Above that and you'd overrev the engine) Just rev-match a VERY big downshift, like going from 3rd to 1st! Try THAT in a Pathfinder. Or this - start in Low range - shift 1 - 2 - 3 - Hi range/2 - 3 - 4 - 5. "WTF - that rusted out silver POS has a 7 speed?"

*sigh*... want another 4wd car. Maybe next time, one that can crack 88mph.

Where do you learn of such things? The Haynes on my Honda doesn't have an internal tranny diagram. It's based on a 2wd model anyhow, but it doesnt have an internal diagram for that either. I wanna see whats inside, but I dont wanna pull it apart. (Getting it out is hell enough.)

88 SEstock went 120MPH floored, but still had lots left on the RPM's - cat might have been clogged
88 TII with Bonez intake went 135MPH @ 6.5RPM - now has a bad case of no compression

cruising down I-10 in mississippi heading for biloxi, a newer model mustang blows past. i turn and look over at my dad and said" do ya mind?"" nah, go get him!" got it up past 135(its all the speedo went up to) and still accelerating... we got to our exit REALLY fast! oh yeah, and i caught up with the stang
it was an 84 gslse, dellorto 48 sidedraft, rb headers, big old streetport, and i really miss her! i've gotten the current 82(12a, dellorto, paceshitter exh) up to at least 120.... not sure of the exact though.

top-out stock

My newly acquired 84 gsl-se 13b with 262000+ kms .. and I'm proud of this .. squeezed a respectable 116 MPH out at night( lights up - a lil more drag) when temps were about 45F, after kickin a 74 Plymouth Roadrunner 340 bored .030 over, hooker headers, performance intake, holley carb, etc. claims over 300hp at flywheel.. I stand proud of my ( he named it before the race - P.O.S. Import) well, at least I can get 10hp/liter.

123 on the highway then had to slowdown to turn. Dunno if I could have gotten more. Felt like it. Usually over 100 every weekend (just to keep everything fully functional )

5500 rpm's in 5th gear in a 1980 with stock tranny and gearing. Only performance mod done so far is a racing beat exhaust. I have no clue what MPH that translates to. (Sucky 80 MPH speedo)

my 7 doesn't move yet (actually none of my three 7's move yet..), but my Civic I had up to a buck fifteen the other day, and it was still pulling pretty hard.. the tires are only H-rated though, so I think I'll hit a buck thirty some day and call it good.. then when I get the '79 built with a turboII.. mmm...

I think alot of us are going faster than we think we are. I know for a fact that my stock speedo stops being accurate after ~120 mph. The other day, I hit 7000rpm in 5th on my 83 (stock port, w/Dellorto and RB long primaries) and that needle wasnt moving much past 120. I routinely race friends who say they are doing over 130 and arent catching up. Hmmm....

I had my car up to 135mph until the road took a turn so I had to let off. It was only at about 6000rpm and still pulling strong. I think I could probably hit 140mph.

I have a 79' Rx-7, with a stock 12a, no mods but soon to put in a street ported 12a so I dont have to change around a lot of stuff.
Anyways I have had my 7 at 127mph but still had plenty of room under the peddle for more but I ran out of straight highway.

The GSL does 83mph slightly downhill. Still needs to be sorted out I don't drive fast anymore, but curiosity got the better of me one day.

'88 SE with headers, free flow exhuast, no cat. High flow intake, adjustable 6port opening valve. 138mph. took a long time after 130 to achieve this by the way. 5th gear is slightly too steep and bogs the speed down when you runs out in 4th to go any faster.

'85 GSL streetport mikuni 44phh, header. 130mph...however the speedo reads below actual with larger diameter tires then stock so, its probably above that some. I think it was 68mph on the dash speedo while the chassis dyno showed 72mph. This gets maginfied as speed is increased.

Oh, hehehheeee.... The fastest my seven went, since I have owned it, was about 80-110.....NOT running. I was being pulled by a friends 240sx.... I was pulled for about an hour, to an hour and a half, on the highway..... (I wasnt driving, since I dont have a liscense) I am not sure of the speed, but the speedometer, was bouncing from about 75-120 and the guy puling me was sayin he was doin about 80-100, maybe a little more......... We got some bad habbits. I couldnt believe we went that fast that far............ But I am happy, I talked him in to doin it, instead of paying a tow truck
