There are two index marks on the distributor. One on the gear and one on the housing. Line them up and drop it in (with the engine at TDC).

I believe if you turn the keyway on the eccentric shaft straight up, that is TDC. Not positive on that one though.

Tell you what, I'll go look at a pulley and compare the eccentic notch for you tomorrow. I'll also go over how to find TDC on a rotary... tomorrow (I really should be in bed right now).

Or does anyone else wanna help out this poor guy before I got the chance?

Its simple-
Step 1 - Line up the YELLOW mark on the pully to the pointer on
the front cover.

Step 2 - There is a DOT or round impression on the distributor
gear line it up with the mark on the dist. housing it will
be a DOT or a raised line/arrow, have the dist. cap
removed so you can hold the gear from turning.

Step 3 - Drop her in, now the arrow on the rotor should point to
the L1 on the cap.

As far as the pully goes it can only go on one way the holes are very slightly offset.

Felix,
pulley notches are on the opposite side of the eccentric notch. It lines up somewhere in between the two pulley notches (from what I could see without actually doing some measurements).

Turbo FB,
Is it true that there is some sort of offset? I've never heard of that before, let alone experienced it. I helped a friend install one of those Camden superchargers and it came with an aluminum serpentine pulley kit. The new main drive pulley simply slid on to the base and was secured with the stock 4 bolts. We made sure to perfectly line up the stock pulley to the pin on the front cover, then we installed the aluminum pulley and marked where the new notches would go, and cut them with a file.

kimbler,
To find TDC on a rotary, pull out the rear Leading plug, stick a 16 guage (or whatever) wire in the hole. Now rotate the engine forward (clockwise) by truning it over by hand (use a ratchet on the alternator nut or the 19mm bolt on the eccentic shaft) until the apex seal touches the wire, then back it off slightly (you will feel it as resistance to the wire as you try to pull it out). This should be pretty close to TDC. Now put on your stock pulley with the notches near the pin on the front cover. Line it up with the 4 bolt holes and install the bolts.

Rereading your post, it looks to me like you don't have a pulley, and you were wondering where to locate one? Do you still have our old engine? Simply find TDC on your new engine, and swap the pulleys. You could practise on your old engine if it's sitting on the floor (it's easy to look into the spark plug holes to see the rotor face and apex seals).

Also, line up your old engine to TDC and memorize what the distributor shaft looks like before you pull it out (just incase), then put it into your new engine and see if it lines up correctly. You may need to pull off the rotor and aluminum cover thing, and look at the reluctor and how it lines up with the pickups. The Leading pickup is towards the front of the car. One of the vains on the reluctor will line up with the Leading pickup. put the rotor back on and the arrow should be pointing forward. There is also a flat part on the dizzy shaft which will be forward as well (I think).

So good luck!

Ah, you just posted. Did you get a chance to read my post? The rear Leading spark plug hole idea works on a 13B too.
