"Thump" after parking

Sometimes after I park and sit in the car for a minute or so I hear a wierd "thump" which seems to come from the back of the car. It probably happens all the time but I rarely sit in the car for a while after I park. Has anybody else noticed this or know what it is? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, good ol backfire. I don't think I've ever seen flames come out, but I know the sound quite well. I kinda like it.

I know what a backfire sounds like, and it is definately not one. It sounds like something moves and then falls back into place or something like that. Thanks for the replies though.

If you have drum brakes, the shoes are worn out. I had the same thing, and I almost thought that they were just making like a noise because of dirt. Come to find out that the bottom portion was metal, while the top was near new... You need to check this out asap.
