Throttle opener question... and more
Hey all,
I've got an 85 GS and I'm rebuilding the nikki carburetor.
I'm trying to take off as much useless emissions crap as possible and still maintain reasonable drivability of the car. I'd like to know if I can take off the following things, and what the repercussions of taking them off are. I just want something simple that works, with as few frills and fringes as possible.
1 - Throttle opener
2/3 - Choke vacuum diaphragms/ What is this sensor? Choke position sensor?
4 - Hot air hose assembly?
Thanks

All that stuff can be taken off as well as the dashpot, which is between 1, 2, and 3. The dashpot closes the throttle slower at the end of the throttle closing. Cant think of a good way to describe what it does. Anyways, if you have a cat you probably need the dashpot still but if not, then take it off. May make your exhaust pop a bit more when shifting and slowing down. It isnt that hard to put back on so try it out and see if you like it.

well, from what I can deduce from the haynes manual, it seems as though the throttle opener is controlled by the AC. Whenever the AC clutch is engaged, it trips a valve in the rats nest which trips the throttle opener. There is a screw on the top of the throttle opener that limits the travel of the throttle opener, and thus the compensation in idle speed that the AC needs. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, what is the fast idle valve? Is it the solenoid with one wire coming off of it, and it's located directly beneath the two main fuel lines going into the carb?

Well, I couln't wait forever, so I just reassembled the carb with the whole mechanical secondaries trick. That is a nice trick. With the combonation of my carb being absurdly out of tune and a fuel check valve problem, my 0-60 time got cut in half. The secondaries actually open now! It's really nice to be able to climb up to about 4500rpm then ease in the secondaries.
